i have a large cage with several budgies and tiels living in harmony, i call them my flock
today i heard a wierd "chirping" comming from the front room, when i looked around everything was calm and fine but when i looked into the flocks cage, i saw a budgie (that i previously thought was a female) mounting and attempting to copulate with one of my tiels!, and the tiel was bent over as if she was trying to make it easier for the budgie. this budgie has a lavander-ish cere and its hard to tell if it is a male or female. i believe it is female cuz a few months ago it had paired up with a known male and they began to nest. this budgie in question i named calamity. calamity was in the nestbox 24/7 chipping at the floor making a nest hallow, and her mate spark was going in and feeding her, but they never produced any eggs so i put them in with the flock. now im puzzled as to why she was attempting to mate with a female cockatiel? and this isnt the first time something like this has happened, another member of the flock is an english budgie named andre. he has been seen, several times, courting feeding and attempting to mate with another female tiel named speckles, there was also a lovebird who was very attached to a female budgie, but i separated the luvbird cuz when the budgie it loved died, it became aggressive and began hacking everyone elses toes. so can anyone tell me what is going on? __________________

Not an expert ...
Well I don't have any wisdom here except to suggest you invest in more cages. Maybe the number of birds & the mixing of species is not really working out. As you already know with your Lovebird - things can change. I remember a while back a member had a Lovie that was mounting everything. It was suggested that they look into all the aspects that trigger birds to get hormonal - ie: long days & short nights. I have 2 male Budgies but so far the older one only spends time with inanimate objects when he gets hormonal. This is an excellent article [SEX AND THE PSITTACINE] but it may not help you this time: Missing Some info - but not too in depth, on animal/bird sex issues: Homosexuality in animals - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For some hilarity: YouTube - Simply Sex: The Birds and the Bees |

we dont need more cages, our appartment is wallpapered with extra cages and we could separate them but the seem to get along and we like the idea of keeping a big multispecies flock together, its just im pissed at calamity cuz she has a wonderful mate, yet she wants a tieland i have an awesome male tiel in there that humped my girlfriends hand, and a stick, yet he doesnt want my other tiels, and my female tiels would rather have budgies than him:(
