DANO, english and normal budgies are the same species, so yes they can breed.... however, you can practically call the english (a.k.a. show) budgerigar a breed within budgies.... because they were purposely bred to be larger and the ability to raise their crest... similar to the american eskimo dog which was bred to be smaller than the normal malamutes and huskies... thus a "miniature husky" even though it's a mix of the malamute, husky, and some other alaskan type dogs...

LOL, I dont know why we call them American Budgies. LOL they are really Australian Budgies/wild type. As opposed to the English budgies which like has been already explained is no more than breeding for specific traits such as size, conformation, temperament ect.
Someone explained it to me the best by stating the english type budgie is sort of like the Thoroughbred horse. They are all still just horses. So would that make a little green budgie a Mustang???? LOL!!

I had 3 Am. and 3 English budgies in a flight cage. They did wonderfully. No problems. They ate together, played together, slept together snuggled next to one another.
One of my Am. males fell in love with a huge English female budgie. They were inseparable.

I would not worry about housing them together.
