sprained wing

I few hours ago Indy was outside the cage playing. Even though his wings are clipped he will fly from the top of his cage to the tabletop. Well, he misjudged and the side of him slammed into his carrying cage, which was on the table.

It was obvious that his wing hurt, there was no blood - I checked. He sat on the perch grooming the wing - so he is able to move it fine. I’ve been watching him and sometimes the wing will just shake. I also notice that it wasn't laying flat against him like the other. I called the vet and they said it was most likely a sprain. The local vet is on vacation but they gave me the name of another if I need one.

For the past hour he has been quiet and resting, not sleeping but eyes closed. He just started to sing as I am typing this. Anyone know how long it takes for a sprain like this to get better?

Arrow Omg!

Hi Rach:

The vet told you over the phone it was sprained but, he might just be dazed. He might have a pin feather or another feather out of place and it's bothering him.

Keep him quiet and let him rest. Also keep your keen eye on him.

Bogie and I await news.

Barbara - I sent you a PM.

The vet is out of town so I talked to someone in the office - I also called the breeder and asked them. They said the same to watch him that it could be a sprain.

He is up and about now - I think he was just in shock from it happening. The wing is laying down like the other.

What a relief to hear he's Ok.

Aside ~ You know how i want all birds to be free flighted....once they are proficient in flying this almost never happens. Of course mine do miss-judge & fall or hit an object once in a while but they are usually amazing aerial acrobats. I feel that if they fall, they can save themselves if flighted.

Course nothing saves Rio when he falls behind something - i had to dig him out behind my pillows the other day - & boy was he upset!

I'm glad he's doing better - it's always scary wondering if something's seriously wrong.

I do agree with Jac in that if he becomes flighted, accidents like that are pretty nonexistent once they learn to control their flight.

You can count me in on the flight thing. Mine2 are out and about all day with 4 cats running around and they never have a problem. They stay up top and the poor cats are on the ground suffering with unanswered desire's NO I NEVER leave them in the room alone=I'm not that crazzzzyyyy Yet.The only problem we do have is with Spidey. My husband says he is probobly older then Sweety and they just stuck him in the cage to get rid of him, which may be true. Also I think he was hurt before we got him. When he flies a lot he starts to get very windedand makes a clicking sound. The vets are useless unless you have a small fortune to spend they really dont want to be bothered with you. To be honest I feel greed is thier true motivation for getting into the buisness. They cant give me any type of guess with out extensive exrays and dont even want to waiste thier time talking to me. says a lot for them dont it??

Indy is doing great this morning! Thank goodness!!! He was on the floor this morning flapping around having a great time!! I looked at him and asked him if his wing was ok and he flapped around some more.

As I said I am going to let his wings grow out. Unfortunately with my current apartment situation - a studio - I have way too much stuff for it to be birdie proof. I am hoping to find a bigger place sometime in the near future.

I forgot & yes a studio apt could very difficult to control. I realize that not everyone has the luxury of a safe place. Hope you get a nice new place - but i don't envy you the move.

Bug broke his wing once when he got caught in a toy. It took about 4 weeks until the wing was fully heeled. The vet didn't do anything, just said to clip his wings and prevent him for trying to use them during the heeling process.

I saw a Tiel, on another Board, that ended up with about 5 different casts. THe owner says it still hurts her sometimes when she's preening - it is a scary thing a broken wing.

I guess your vet had the experience to know a cast wouldn't do anything &/or the break was such that a splint made no sense. Clipping in this instance is an interesting therapy. Is Bug Ok now? & how's his Zon love?

Psst~ HI!
