A brown cere is either a mature female or a maturing female, a male that is malnutritioned, or a bird who is sick and showing signs if being sick.

I once owned a mature female with a crusty brown cere, and once had another that her cere was a tan color. So I'd say that you quite possibly have a female as long as the bird is quite healthy!

How can you tell? The cere looks like it has a blueish tinge to me? Is there another clue I am missing?

Sex

I have a cinnamon female with a bluish-whitesh cere. I thought she was he when she was younger but found out that females can have bluish ceres but they will not be brilliant blue like a males. But most of all, she acts like a female. Rather bossy & agreesive to my male. They also have different shape nostrils.

Thank you. I know some colour mutations affect the standard colour of the cere, but I'd never heard of females even having the slightest tinge of blue. Pinkish, yes... and even males with pink ceres, but this is a new one to me!

Thanks. About the nostrils... I have heard this, too, that the nostrils are different. I guess I've never looked at my birds' nostrils closely enough to note the difference.

It is said that a males cere is more roundish where'as a females cere is a bit more 'flatter'. A males cere normally is a waxy coloration, looking quite smooth, and the females ceres may look smooth but not waxy like, or may even be crusty and rough...

Hi budgie people -- I haven't posted in a long time. You may remember me, I had got a very young budgie that turned out to be a female -- Peedee. Well she went to live with a nice family who wanted a female.

I tried again for a male after doing tons of looking and researching to be sure I would get a boy. I learned a lot! This does look like a female. Anytime there is white around the nares (nostrils) it is most likely a male. Also the blue color is an indication of a female.

My boy - Coby - came with a very rounded bright pink cere. Also his behavior, from the very beginning, was different from Peedee. And...brag, brag, I have only had him 3 months and he can say very plainly many phrases. The cutest being, "I taught, I taw a puddy tat! I DID I taw a puddy tat!" He says the whole thing!! Too cute!

Rainbow is a very beautiful color -- and I have always admired all of your birds and love the pictures!! Good luck! Hope you get that yellow-faced cobalt you long for! :icon_mrgr

How old is Rainbow? I looked through all 57 of those pics. All females I've ever worked with have ceres that turn brown during their breeding cycle. I've never seen an exception to this rule. Sometimes the cere becomes crusty and sometimes it does not but it does turn brown (some lighter than others). Sometimes this is the only way to know for sure without surgery/dna sexing.

Your Rainbow reminds me of a young male. Though in pictures it can be difficult to tell because of lighting. So I won't say anything for sure. You will find out eventually though! :D
