Which wild grasses are safe?
My bird Blue still won't eat fruits of vegetables so I thought I might try some wild grasses in an attempt to get some form of nutrition into her. I saw the "budgie cookbook" post and it is very good... but are there any wild grasses I need to worry about in particular? I live in West Texas. My idea was to go out and look for .. well grasses with seeds on the top, like crab grass (which I've read is actually a type of millet).

I have been trying to offer wild grasses to budgie. So far all he really does with them is rip the seeds off and chew the twig up. Not much on consumption that I can tell, but he does go crazy for them.
If I recall, from that one resource, there is one grass he mentions to be cautious with. The one with two things sticking out of it. He says to not feed that one too often or at all. If I had a yard, I would grow some types of grass and meadow grasses. Plus I would grow clovers, chickweed, dandelions, various herbs, millets, etc. Oh how I wish I had a yard... All I can do is try to grow those things in a pot on my patio. I am running out of room as it is...haha |
