Newest Rescue... Smallest So Far

I usually don't take in parakeets, my partner does, but he was living in a cardboard box. The owner was mentally disabled and some stupid pet store still let her come in and by a bird. From the moment I met her I could tell she was mentally handicap, just goes to show they only care about money.

Now he is in a HUGE cage! It is 54" Tall, 42" Wide and 24" Deep. Some of the toys are too big, but he hangs from them and I was not stocked up on parakeet supplies!

His nails were so long they were spirals, now we have them as short as they will go.

**Sorry the picture is so dark, it was naptime in the bird room. We have a 2 hour period from 2pm - 4pm where the lights are dimmed and it is quiet time. For the most part it is quiet, every once in awhile you hear the faint jingle of a toy.

I was worried at first about putting him in such a large cage, but that was the smallest I had. He has been flying around and playing, so I guess he loves it.

Just about 5 minutes ago he ate millet from my hand! Yeah...then he bit me, I didn't move (seriously a parakeet bite..nothing), he looked at me, fluffed up and continued to eat the millet for a few more seconds.

He is cute, I feel bad for him but am more upset with the pet store for selling an animal to someone that clearly is not mentally fit.

Today I stopped to buy a few things at the petstore, without knowing who I am they start telling me about the Eclectus they have and trying to get me to buy him. I wish they would take a moment to feel a person out before pushing a parrot on them.

I hate bad owners, but sometimes bad owners were created by bad pet stores filling their minds with , "This is a great pet, easy to care for, etc."

To be fair...

A lot of mentally disabled people are quite capable of taking proper care of pets. While your situation might/has proved differently with a specific person, please don't judge all mentally disabled people in such a harsh light. It's ALL individual.

I wasn't placing all mentally disabled into one group, I was just stating that in her case it was obvious that she could not care for a bird and they should have known better.

I apologize if it appeared that I think all mentally disabled people are incapable of caring for a pet. That was not my intention, I even said that I don't blame her, she was doing the best she could, I blamed the pet store for being more concerned with making money.

I agree with you there. I'm not fond of most 'super mart' pet stores at all. I really wish that people would have to get a permit to buy a bird or any animal. Just make a 2 hour class on the animal type they want, make them take a test at the end. Simple, easy and it might wake some of these people up. At the very least, they'll be more inclined not to get the animal since it won't be an easy spot purchase.
