hi,

i don't know if there is a difference in temperament between the different colours; i wouldn't think there is, but i'm not sure.

males and females have different issues that must be considered, but i think both would make wonderful pets once you understand what their needs are. for females, an important thing to know is that they can have serious reproductive problems (egg binding, excessive egg laying, cloacal prolapse due to egg laying strain, etc.). but, males can have reproductive issues as well: they can be just as hormonal, just as overstimulated, have issues with their reproductive organs, etc. also, i have experienced female budgies to be more aggressive and males to be subordinates, but this is limited to my experience with my brother's few budgies. thus, this may not be the case with the budgie you decide to get.

as well, have you considered getting two budgies instead of just one? the reason i ask is because birds love to have companies of their own kind, and two budgies would be happier, i think, than a lone one if you can't devout a few hours of interaction to them each day. but, remember that if you do, this is twice the responsibility and cost. and, you would have to consider issues such as reproduction if you were to keep a male-female pair.

good luck and please keep us posted.

I am no expert on budgies but I have had a few and I do a lot of reading on birds. I would suggest a male for you. In my opinion, they tend to make better pets. I find them less nippy, more comical with their head bobbing lol and they are able to talk. Many males talk but it is never a guarantee with any bird. Very rarely do females ever talk, they just chatter. Males are more prone to fatty tumors than females though, although both genders may develop them. Females can become constant egg layers and it could lead to egg binding or other health problems. My little guy passed a while back from a tumor. I have an affection for blue budgies but I can't say there is a personality difference with different colors. I have a green and yellow pied baby now and he is sweet too. Even at the age you mentioned, a breeder or knowledgeable bird person should be able to tell the gender difference by the budgie's cere. It will be all white for a girl and slightly purple for a male. Good luck with your new bird. I am just starting again with a baby too. With time and patience your bird will become a great pet. My last guy said 20 words and many sound effects. He was a great little fid.

Thanks :) and i had heard they could talk and had decited I wanted one b4 i really even knew how well! It BLEW my mind when I watched some of the vids on youtube! I dont think you should ever buy a bird for the ability to talk alone. I mean yes it is a plus....but no reason to buy one bc like you said it is no guarentee they will.

Well all the male budgies I have ever had have been lovely birds. I've never had any experience with the females, but I don't think you would go wrong if you got a male one. As for colour, choose one you like. I'm not sure if the colour makes a difference to how intelligent the bird is or it's length of life. My old natural green one lived a long time and was a great talker, but other people have very mutant coloured ones that they claim are just the same, so it should make no difference.

Yeah I know the excitment! If there's a good selection, then there is a chance you'll find one that you bond with right away, or at least feel very drawn to.
