Roosting Cage

Does your birds have a separate roosting cage in addition to their daytime/play cages?

Iris sleeps in his travel cage being that he bonded to it from day one. He is very comfortable in it but I wonder is the size of his sleeping quarters still appropriate for him? It's 24"X17"X20"H.

Throughout the day he's never put into his sleeping/traveling cage. If ever I need to cage him during the day, he's put into his much larger play cage. It's 32"X22"X70"H.

I was advised by his breeder that a sleeping cage should be small and virtually empty besides the food, water bowl, and perch to minimize accidents from occuring throughout the night. It was his breeder who made the suggestion of his traveling cage doubling up and being used as his roosting cage. However, Iris is just a little older and a little less clumpsy. I was wondering should I invest in a larger size sleeping cage but one that is still small (one like this) or will he be fine with what he has?

Charlie is a mitred conure... he lives in a 40x30x60 macaw cage with plenty of room, although he seems as if he could care less about the size of the cage... cause all he wants is OUT!

He's got a "cabin kennel" for a sleeping cage. It was originally bought as a carrier only for the other birds... however he later took it over as a sleeping cage... which worked out fine, at least it did in the beginning! That's where he sleeps at night, with nothing inside it (no perches, no dishes, no toys), which is placed in the bathroom (darkest room in the house, and it's one that is hardly ever used). Everyone tends to get more sleep in the mornings with him in there, and he's usually out by 9-9.30am. Although as of late, even with up to 16 hours of sleep (he's been getting crankier before the sun goes down, thus been going to sleep earlier than norm) he still wakes up cranky...

I honestly don't think you need to upgrade his sleeping cage, if that's all it is being used for (besides a carrying cage, too).

Okay, thanks for the response. I just wanted to make sure because there is a bird show coming up and if I was going to upgrade I would have wanted to obtain it from there.
As I stated before, Iris seems to love his sleeping/traveling cage. He seems totally comfortable in it. I just wanted to make sure that he didn't need anything a little larger.

I just saw this thread and wanted to add that my hahn's macaw sleeps in an 18X18X18 but plays in a much larger cage during the day. I have read that birds prefer to sleep separately from where they roost. They just feel instinctively safer. I would recommend to people with birds that pluck, to try using a roosting cage. Some behaviorists say that sleeping where they play, causes birds to be really nervous.

Anyway, your post is old, but I don't think you need to upgrade!

Thank you for your input. A thread is never too old for advice. Thanks.
