You do have to be careful using plastic carriers even for short times with a blue and gold, we found this out the hard way. We took Gypsy (B&G) to the vet in one of the regular dog type pet carriers. The vet had to go out of his office for a few minutes and left her in his office in the carrier (10-20 minutes total!!) and she chewed completely through the side. She started at one area where they have the holes for air circulation and chewed a hole big enough to climb out. She was sitting on top of the carrier when he came back in. We have found a way to revamp these carriers for use though. We use rubber coated hardware cloth and create a screen for the area where the holes are in a carrier. We bolt it in from the corners this is sturdy enough they cannot chew through, it is not toxic and has no zinc or lead (we did test it!!) I don't know if this is true of all types or just the one we got. The carrier is much easier to carry than most of the metal ones. We also added a perch into the middle of the carrier so we don't have to worry about them wandering around on the flat surface. For us comfort is a priority since our main vet is an hour away.
We did try one metal carrier for a while but found it more bendable and unwieldy than what we wanted and our macaw was able to undo the latch from the inside but then she is an escape artist from most things LOL so this may not be a worry for others.
