I got the Silverado cage for Chief, my GW. We got ours from Windy City Parrots and they were great. At the time, it was the cheapest place we could find this particular cage. I know in the next few years, we'll have to suck it up and buy stainless cages for both macaws, but for now, Chief doesn't really mess with the bars or anything like that. (Sarge is a different story.) It really doesn't have a scratch on it and we've had it for almost a year.

They attach with screws. Here's a few pictures of it to get a perspective when it has toys and such in it (there's no bird in it in the pictures though). I think the bird room has 9' or 10' ceilings. We really haven't had any problems with the cage. If you have any other questions about the cage, I'd be happy to help

Thanks for posting those pics Chief's Mom.
![]() That is a big cage. I've done lots of measuring trying to figure out location options. Some how the tape measure doesn't do it justice. With toys, perchs, and such do you feel like Chief has enough room? Can he get a good wing stretch? Or is it a little to big? Does he get good tail clearence? Hoping to keep those pretty tail feather intact. This would be for a greenwing too, but she's 5 months old. No telling how big she'll endup. Sorry for the long post. Your help is much appreciated ![]() |

It's definitely not too big...I don't think you'll ever find a macaw cage that's too big
When you first get your baby, you may want to put things pretty low, especially in this cage since its so tall. Macaws, and GWs in particular, tend to be VERY clumsy as babies. It took Chief a little while to learn how to get around, but now she slides herself across the top bars using only her beak I think I'm lucky because she doesn't seem the least bit interested in tearing the cage apart at the seams. Sarge, my military, will spend all day gnawing at the welds of his cage I'm pretty sure I can get at least a few more years out of hers

Hello!
I have used Drs Foster Smith for a LONG LONG time in some way, shape or form. I have used them for cat, dog, pond, and bird supplies - and they are quite a name in my family. However, I looked at that very same cage on their site and was interested in ordering it - until I saw the thickness of the wire... I can't remember what it was off the top of my head - but I called in to their support because I knew it had to be a misprint. The bar thickness (not spacing - the actual gauge of the wire used) was thinner them by Cockatiel cage. It was TINY... so I chose not to use it since I was looking shopping for a GreenWinged... but it could work if you are trying to home smaller birds... I just wouldn't EVER use that cage for larger birds with powerful beaks... I don't think it would last around my household for any amount of time... But give them a call just to see... I spoke with some of their vets on call to voice my concern and I was told by their vets that they understood and thought large birds could be problematic in the cage... so I went cage shopping elsewhere. I got the double macaw cage - and it is huge... strong... and I couldn't be happier. Hera has more then enough room to have a blast... and she's very active and spends muchof her day rolling around on the bottom playing with toys, and swinging on toys from one side of the cage to another... So for my two cents... just be weary of the bar thickness!! But aside from that cage, I DO love Drs. Foster and Smith!! Best of Luck... ~Kevin |

Whoopsie Daisy! Didn't see the second page of the post... Sorry for that mistake!! I am glad to hear that things went well for you. And I hope that it last a long time for you! Some birds are much better then others in terms of bar biting. My cockatoo rarely ever does anything to her bars... but Hera... she can be a little rough on them...
But I apologize again for overlooking the fact that there was another page - and congratulations on the cage! Best Regards, ~Kevin |

Chief turned one on April 29th. Sarge, we don't know. He was a pet store 'rescue'. (That's what I call him to justify the impulse purchase, as I was not happy with the way they were handling him!
We celebrate his hatch day on March 8th because that's the day we purchased him ![]()
