making a cage?

hey all,
been off here for a while....sort of gave up when my rents said no! but i got plenty of excuses as to why i want a bird but anyway getting to the point....
has anyone ever made a bird cage out of wood? i know birds like to chew wood etc but i have this idea for a GCC that i think might work. i read somewhere and it said a good cage size would be 3ft (long im guessing) x 2ft x 2ft?
any how my dads a builder and gets a crap load of wood etc that i would be able to use.
im not sure how to explain it, but its basically like a rectangle with a towere that would be an extra 1ft high
half the cage = 1.5ft x 2ft x 2ft (L x D x H)
other half = 1.5ft x 2ft x 3ft (L x D x H)
the front has 2 opening doors with 1/2 inch wire. one door is half the cage, the other door is for the higher part but opens up that hole section.
the higher side is also all 1/2 inch wire but with no doors....(this allows more light in so i dont need to put lights or anything in.
because it would be wood i would also be able to go into the bush (not like i have enough already) but i can screw gum tree branches onto the sides and put in all sorts of toys that can be fixed to the top side and back!
anyways, would ply would be ok?
