Question Birdbath in cage?

I have a 10 month old female cockatiel, I just got her a week ago and already we've made a lot of progress in training her.

Today I put a bowl filled with water on the bottum of her cage and she immediately began playing in it.

I looked around at the pictures of other cages you guys posted and I didn't see anyone else do this in their cages. Is there a good reason not to keep a bird bath in there?

Probably because it will get poo and food in it, and you dont really want them playing in soiled water...

well, I have it in the corner of the cage where no perches are above it, and I've been checking and it's still clean.

thanks for the speedy reply.

My conure just bathes in his drinking water dish. The Pi prefers showers.

Neko bathes in his own water dish, Oliver and Emi dont seem to enjoy water. I sometimes put a bigger bowl in the bottom of his cage and he will use that. Also, I actually got a bird bath that attaches to the inside of the cage for him to use - he likes that a lot too. There is no problem putting a bowl of water in the cage, only thing is you gotta keep changing the water which isn't tough to do! I change my birds water about 3 times a day as it is so one more time doesn't kill me = )

Well, it's been in there all day now, and no poop. Granted, I was off of work today so she didn't spend much time in her cage today. All of the days poop is on my shirt!

My advise to you is if you cannot have a bird bath attatched to the cage because of the cages design (I had this problem when a bird bath I had fit their Maya cage but would NOT fit their San Diego cage in any way) I would get the biggest feeding bowl you can, attatch it inside the cage where there are no overhanging branches, and fill it with water.

I have a bird bowl that's supposed to be a very big feeding bowl (diameter about 15cm) but I use it as a combined drinking bowl/bath for my 'tiels. The purpose of this is to give them a shallow enough dish so they can stand in it comfortably, fill it only about 1/2 to 2/3rds, and if they don't use it as a bath on a given day they can still use it as a drinking source. I say a BIG bowl because as you know cockatiels are about 30cm long, and half of that is tail, so you want something that will let them sit in it and let their long tails poke out without being awkward

Remember, if they DO take a bath, change the water so they can drink later!

Right, the bowl I'm using is actually a normal human bowl, not sure on the measurements, but it easily fits a package of ramen noodles without touching the sides or poking out the top lol.

I plan on changing the water out(as I did when I just supplied a water dish) every morning. theres a tiny branch overhead but she's not so fond of so I don't think she'll spend much time above the bowl for her to poop in.

I haven't even considered buying a birdbath for the cage.. I'm kinda cheap. I spent a good part of my day today makeing toys and such out of things I had lying around. infact, I haven't bought anything for her yet. Most of what I have was given to me with the bird.

Mine both had a water bowl all day today... i was doing dishes this morning and they started chirping at me like crazy every time I turned the water on :) Obviously they wanted some water to play in!

Not an everyday thing, but pretty frequent.

I have some designated Bird dishes... glazed ceramic that can go in the dishwasher.

if you have a petsmart near you, you can get a really nice birdbath that attaches to the side of the cage for around $5.
