Is this ok as a travel cage?

I have just about everything ready for Olive when she gets here, but now I have to figure out HOW I am going to get her home!

I have this hamster cage just sitting in my closet, so I thought it could double as a nice travel cage also. (after some serious cleaning of course).

It is 24" in length x 12" wide and 12" high...I just want to make sure its not too big. I have a nice perch I can put in there for her, and I was also going to line the bottom with a blanket, then cover it with one also for the car ride.

The only thing I am really concerned with is the size of the door...which is a 8 1/4" wide by 6" high. Is that too small?

I just want to make sure this will be ok for a travel cage so I have enough time to order one if I need to.

If this is ok, what could I use to clean and disinfect it?

Sounds like a great use of the hamster cage to me. :)

Can't see any reason why it wouldn't be appropriate so long as the fabric you line it with is non-toe catching.

Ok good! For a non toe catching blanket...Im guessing a bed sheet would work ok but a bath towel not so much?

And, what should I clean the cage with?

Wash it with soap and hot water. Rinse thoroughly. Then rinse it with water with disinfectant in it- preferably an avian one. Then rinse it off thoroughly. A nice thick layering of newpaper would be good on the floor of the cage.

I've had several failures trying to get birds through small doors. Might work for a green cheek, but picture bird, plus feet flayed, grasping at cage plus one human hand, as you try to stick her in. Just make sure you have enough door!
