My sad sad story

Hello everyone im afraid my first post here is going to be a bad one. My beloved caique gizmo who is only eight months old was put to sleep last night. my wife and I are in horrible shap after what me went through on the weekend.
Friday eavening I arrived home to my little friend who sounded like he had lost his voice from screeming or something, His breeathing was normal and had no other signs of being ill. saturday morning his voice was almost back to noraml as i woke to him singing and talking to himself, He then played danced and ancted like an idiot all day then.......... bang he started breathing strangly so the vet in my town was called and i was givin a "sorry our bird specialist is only here from monday to friday and we cant help him" the only people we could get to look at him are three hours away!! they told us that the trip could make it worse and its better to see if he gets any worse. saturday night he not get much sleep and on sunday things just got worse and worse. after reapeted angry calls to the vet here begging them to help my little buddy we were forced to make the car trip down south,
When we got there they took him away from us, saying that they would do blood tests, x-rays and try to treat him even though they had no bird specialist eather. five hours went buy and they called us in My little friend Gizmo was bairly standing with his wings drooping on the bench puffing away. the vet insisted we put him to sleep he put the niddle in and all life left my little friend.
I can not express how sad i am right now, We found out that the vet actually did nothing but put him in an oxeygen chamber for four hours then gave him a shot of antibiotics. but it was too late he was so tired.
We brought him home last night wraped him in his favorite blanket and put his favorite toys in a little coffin bettween the berry bushs where we sat in summer picking and eating berries together.
I am so so sad right now and very angry that me best friend was treated like a goldfish. the poor little soul I hope he is in a better place I hope I hope.

Thankyou all, The thing is that in sweden the law is that all animals have to be treated at any hour of the day. the clinic here would not even take him in to try and help him. so I am also very mad at them. they could have called there bird specialist for advice or something.

I am so sorry, first that you have lost your beloved Gizmo. Beyond that, I am sorry that you were given such a run-around as you watched things get progressively worse. On top of grief you are rightly also dealing with a great deal of anger. It's not right. Let us know if there is anything we can do to get you through this.

Thanks mate. yeah it is horrible it makes even harder for us to deal with when the poor little guy was not treated with respect. I even noticed that the vet was ussing big leather gloves to handle him. this is a bird that would lay on his back and let ya do anything. Im angry that vets dont know how to handle birds.

i'm so very sorry for your loss - i can't imagine how i'd react seeing a vet handling my baby like that... i'm lucky that i have excellent avian vets around. i think i would have just yelled at him for hours.... maybe expressing your disappointment regarding the treatment in a letter would help - not only you, but maybe they realize that they treated gizmo wrong and will do a better job the next time (won't bring your baby back, but might help another baby)

i'm very sorry - fly free, little gizmo

Well today I had a meeting with the bossīs of the vet clinic that refused to take gizmo in for help. They where very upset that this happened and assured me that they will talk to all people involved including the other clinic to find out why they would not let him in. They also reasured me that they will put in place a system so that a specialist is contactable on the weekends to assist the emergancy staff, and also that they specialists will educate the staff on how fast they must react in these situations.
They will be in contact with me later in the week to discuss what they have found out.
So it looks like the only good thing to come of this horrible event is that they will take birds more seriously in the future and I plus other bird lovers in my area will never have to go through this again.
