Very loud

Hi...Gilbert is an absolute joy in our home. We are all having a great time with him!!!! However, he has a very high and loud shrill cry. Is there any way to curtail this? When he starts in, I ignore him so as not to reinforce it but it can go on for 10 min. or so. Any suggestions???

I would say to continue to ignore the behavior obviously. There's not a whole lot that can be done. How much time do you guys spend with him out of the cage?

What are you doing when he starts this? I noticed that our quaker does the same thing when we are watching TV. Basically we are ignoring him. So we try to have him out with us on the couch when we do so and the screaming stops.

Hi...Many times he does it when he's in his cage and we're eating dinner or when we don't have him out. However, many times when he's up on his playtop he'll do it and we're sitting on the couch right next to him. I just got home and he's in his cage and as quiet as a mouse. He also starts in when I'm on the phone.

Sounds like he just wants attention. Obviously, you can't give it to him 24/7. I usually stick a carrot or celery stick in their face. haha

When I got Zeek as a baby, I was determined to train him not to scream. One day, he made a crying noise. I believe it was just a random noise. When I heard it, I ran to his cage, took him out and cuddled him. It did not take him long to realize that his crying resulted in LOTS of attn. Now, instead of sceaming, he will cry. I dont know where he picked it up from, or if he just made it up, but it has worked beautifully over the years. Very rarely does he do the shrill caique fire alarm or the repetitive shrill screams, but then I just figure he is being a caique. WHatever you do, do not reward the loud scream, shrill whistles, or fire alarm calls.

Thanks for all the great input. We will just continue to ignore him when he starts in with his loud screams. Right now he's content and enjoying his snacks.

I have decided with my two caiques that there is nothing I can do to get them to stop, except pick them up. Since I do not want them on me all the time and I have other birds that need mommy time also, I just let them scream. When it get to much, I will put them in their cage in the bird room and sometimes that quiets them down. I think between the macaws and caiques I am either going to go deaf or insane. LOL

With mine, when they are really going off, I'll put them in their travel cages in the other room and close the door. Once they are quiet for a couple minutes, they can go out into their normal cages again. Thats not all the time, only for when they are really being loud. I live close to people so I have to be concerned about neighbors.
