Question Caique and a Linnie?

Hi,

I have a 8 month old White Bellied Caique named Tango and I am in the process of getting a Lineolated Parakeet (linnie). I know that I cannot house them together or anything, they will have separate cages. My question is though, since a Linnie is larger than a normal parakeet, do you think it would ever be safe to have the two of them to have out of cage time together if they did not seem aggressive (moreso tango than the linnie).. or should I just put this out of my mind altogether? Does anyone have a Caique and a Linnie?

Thanks!

Don

I'd put it out of my mind altogether.. caiques are too highly aggressive towards other birds for it to be safe for the linnie. My male caique has tried to jump my parrotlets several times.

I agree... Caiques definitely have a reputation for being bird-aggressive.

Some can't even be with another caique!

Mine is always safely in his cage before I even think about letting my others out. Not willing to take a chance here.

Thank you for setting me straight, I pretty much new what the answer was but in the back of my mind I was secretly hoping! I will definitely keep them separated. Tonight when she was asleep under my chin as cute as can be, I forgot what a hyperactive and moody girl she can be sometimes. Thanks for the reality check!

I don't have a caique but I agree with the other posters. I watched a baby caique torment baby moluccans and umbrellas. I watched another one stalk a baby quaker across the floor of an aviary until just the right moment, then jump it because it had disrespected the baby caique. I've seen the damage a medium sized bird can do to a small bird. It isn't a pretty site. I wouldn't risk the linnie.
Congrats on the new baby though!

Our caiques Penny and Perry were OK with our kakarikis (similar in size to a linnie) at first, until all the pine nuts were gone... then I think the caiques considered the kakarikis a threat, and started to go after them. Nothing happened but we won't allow them out together again!
