I dont know if that is the average price, but at my local pet store they were trying to sell one for $3000, and thats ridiculous. $1,600 seems like a much more reasonable price than that. but maybe it's above average price, too.

Boy - most bird prices have come down a bit. I believe that one of our local breeders sells her white belly babies for $900 or $950. And sometimes the prices are a little higher here because we are a little more limited on local breeders. I would have never been able to get my caiques if I paid that much - sounds pretty steep to me.

1,600 sounds really high. But maybe that's the going rate in that area. Around here (Midwest) and in Illinios Black headed sell for more than the white bellies but average is around $750.

There are breeders on "Up at Six".com who sell them for as little as $750, or on BirdBreeders.com, as well.
Those are pretty far away from me, so if I got another it would be local so my baby wouldn't have to fly. Around here, babies are from $900-1100. Of course, any pet or bird shop (where I wouldn't buy anyway) is going to be much more.
