It all sounds pretty awful all round. If you cannot afford veterinary care then, as Mary said, an animal shelter may help you. In the meantime, please be sure that the little guy can eat and drink ok and keep him in a warm and draught free environment. Partially cover the cage and, if you have a lamp then a low wattage bulb shining nearby will give him a warm area to sit. You have to position it right so he can't burn himself (or anything else!) but so it is supplying gentle heat. You should also think about putting something soft on the floor of his cage (a towel or similar) so he won't hurt himself if he falls again. Good luck.

All the best,

Heather

how pompous and uncaring for you to make that comment, when i am doing all i can do to keep my pet alive. i said, ALL I CAN DO!!!!
what are you, a member of the SPCA or something? are you rich? perhaps you have hundreds and hundreds of dollars, perhaps thousands, to pop your canary to the vet, but i do not.

that certainly is NOT a reason why i cannot enjoy have a pet, or own a pet, or take care of a pet the best i know how, the best way my means allows.

i would wager that you are full of hot air, a poser, and should you own a canary for 5 or 6 years, that was already an old bird when you took over the care of him from a neighbor that moved and left him in their house, you would not spend 1000's of dollars on the bird if you could take care of him yourself.

that, without a doubt, has to be one of the most selfish, most uncaring things ive ever read on a group message board.

and, i appreciate everyones confidence in my pets abiltity to survive.
what an optimistic bunch here at the bird (brain) board. you all certainly know the right things to say.

(this anger is NOT aimed at the others who were caring, who offered help, and who did not JUDGE ME. you know who you are)

and, by the way.....MY PET IS FINE THIS MORNING.

i was scared at first, panicky to be sure, but....HE HAD A COLD.

i cleaned his swollen eye three times a day with a warm rag and the swelling has gone down. i brought him out and gave him water to drink 4 or 5 times a day. he drank from my hand. he drank from a dish as he got stronger. i kept him on a small heated pad these past days, kept him warm, and even had a small towell to cover him to keep the heat in. this morning he is pecking at his food.....his canary food that i buy at the feed store, and never run out of, in his clean cage, that i clean once a week.

MY PET SURVIVED.
I AM GLAD THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO CARE FOR MY BIRD MYSELF.
HE IS SITTING ON MY SHOULDER AT THIS MOMENT, HELPING ME WRITE TO YOU OH SO CARING FOLKS.

what a trip. really, what a judgemental, cast a stone, rediculous thing to say.

I'm glad your bird is doing better and hope he continues to thrive. I assure people were only concerned for his health and well being. Please let us know how he does in a follow up thread.

To avoid further debate on the economics of bird care, which we have discussed in other threads, I am closing this one.
