I wouldnt worry about the canaries injuring the owls- I have a canary in with my finches and have heard many people who keep mixed flights. Canaries are gentle giants in the finch world.
Its actually more a thing of "Do the owls have canary pox?" Finches can carry a disease called canary pox- it will never affect the finches in any way, shap or form. But stick a finch in with a canary (who, strangly is just a big finch) and that disease can be passed onto the canary and kill the canaries. Finches who are bred in outdoor flights are the ones who are the most common carriers of this disease.
