Breeding canaries?

Hi there
Do canaries breed well in an aivary and can I keep them together with gouldian finches and zebra finches or will they start fighting?
I hope that someone can help me.
Thanx :)

Ya need to be more specific Bunny. What are the dimensions of the "aviary" and where is it located??

Best is each species separate but if avairy is big enough, ok to keep the Goulds and canaries together but I wouldn't keep Zebs in with either, they are just too disruptive IMO & IME. I would not endanger the lives of baby canaries or baby Goulds with the Zebs presence or lose any eggs to the Zebs causing abandonment by the others due to their behavior.

The aivary is 2 metres long, 1,50 metres broad and 2 metres high.It stands under a tree and it gets morning sun and afternoon sun, half of the aivary is protected by a roof.
Thanx

One pair of Canaries will breed in a colony setting but I would not advise adding more than one Canary male in with hens or they will fight each other! One Canary male will breed with 2-3 hens. Zebra Finches can get very territoral when breeding. If you add Zebras in with Gouldians & Canaries I would keep one even pair only! If you are really intrested in the breeding of the birds I would cage all of them seperatly by pairs. Gouldian Finches do fine in a colony but normaly in this setting only dominate pairs of birds will breed.

Hi singing-wings :)
So gouldians alone in an aivary would breed without fighting and don't gouldian males fight. How many paires would I be able to keep in a 5 feet broard by 6 feet long by 6 feet high aivary?
I don't want them to be over croweded.
Thanx.

Janine

Gouldian Finches are pretty laid back birds. They are beatuiful but they do not do all the bouncing/flying back and forth like Zebras do all the time. Gouldian Finch males rarley fight like Zebras. They may bicker slighty to defend nest but that's about it. I have seen hen Gouldians chase males until they took over brooding duties so the hen could bathe, eat and drink. It's a funny site but this is normal! I would think you could comfortably fit 5-10 pairs of Gouldian in a flight that size but as I said you will get much better results breeding Gouldians one pair per cage/flight as only dominant pairs will breed.
