My Gouldians

My new gouldians are settling in well. I put a nest box in and half filled it with november grass. They promplty pulled most of it out....lol. I have also put november grass, 2 other grasses in there and feathers in their cage.

I caught them mating yesterday and they have been messing about in and out of the nest box for a few weeks, but no eggs. After seeing them mate, i am expecting eggs in about 5 days. Fingers crossed.

Glad to see your nest box is quite deep.Gouldian cocks have a habit of throwing chicks from the nest, especially young parents. It's unusual for you to see them mating. The mating usually takes place inside the nestbox and is one of the reasons some think for the habit of chick ejection from the nest by an over enthusiastic male.
Good luck and keep us informed...don't forget to start feeding eggfood now. They may ignore it,but better for it to be present before the chicks hatch and begin begging.
Paul.

Well they started mating on the perch which I also thought was odd. Then the next day they mated in the nest box. Ive already started giving them egg food. I cant beleive how big the eggs are!!!

Will keep you all posted.

A pair of mine last year raised three clutches of seven, one died after a couple of weeks the rest survived.Twenty chicks from one pair in a year...I had to seperate them to give them a rest otherwise they would have continued.
If you have a good pair, they can reward you many many times over. It's not always bad news, sometimes you get lucky.
Lets hope your two are good 'uns.
Paul.
