Pierre

Hello again,

It's been a while since I was here last. But I just wanted to give an update. I don't know how many remember, but last I was here I was asking for help with a clutch of 4 zebra finch babies. Well, only one ended up surviving (named Pierre), but he has not only survived but thrived. He is beyond the dependent stage now by at least a month. I'm somewhat surprised though, I thought that adult colors weren't supposed to come in untill about 9 months after hatching. But Pierre already has the red beak, the beginnings of cheek patches, checkers under his wings, and some black breast bars that are characteristic of the males. I believe he is working on his song already, too.

I don't have any way to post pictures yet, but when I do I will.

I have a question. I've been reading about the various color mutations that Zebra finches can have. But I'm wondering, as a breeder, how exactly do you "select" (or can you) for certain mutations? Currently, I have a female (Emma) who is rather pale, and a male (Darwin) of normal color. Voltaire, their offspring, is a male with a little bit lighter of a color...

You should probably start a new thread in the finch section for this maybe called "Breeding: selecting Zebra finch colour mutations????" or something like that so a finch breeder with more knowledge will be able to help.
