hybrid ((zebra&society finch)) lay 1 egg

Hi All, I think i have a hen thats a zociety ((zebra and society mixs)). I brought her from a local pet store couple weeks ago. And I put her with my male zebra finch. They been mating couple times I have seem them. lol. where he sings and then jump on her. This morning I saw that they had an egg. I was very happy but my question or concern is that i thought you cant breed a hybrid bird> i guess its not true huh>> or if it is the egg probably wont hatch. :=( can someone who has a success in breeding hybrid finch give me some advice. thanks

Hybrids can lay eggs... the question is on the fertility of the hybrid parent... Some hybrids are sterile while others are fertile... all depends on how closely related the genes are, as well as what generation of hybrids (in macaws, many are supposedly infertile when they are 3rd-4th generation, yet 1st and 2nd generations usually do not have problems reproducing). If the two are closely enough related then their offspring could reproduce for generations to come! If they aren't closely related well it varies how closely will depend on whether or not they can produce chicks in the first place, if the chicks will be healthy/not deformed secondly, and thirdly, if fertile or not.

Did you email me about that? lol. I think I remember an email where someone was in the same situation as you! :P
I think that the eggs will be fertile. Though as like Monica said, it depends on how closely the genes are related.

Why do you think its society? Can we see pics?

Most likely the eggs will be fertile.. societies are hybrids already, they are not a naturally occuring finch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that the first picture you attached is of a pied zebra finch.

No you're not wrong. thats what everything thinks too. ^_^ I'm appreciated your honest answer. **I believe its a pied one too** For some reason the pet store who sold it to me. said it was a hybrid. which they are wrong.
