Shakespeare the Canary
Here are a couple picture of Shakespeare, my Canary.
We've had him a few weeks and enjoy his company. I whipped up a huge batch of eggbread yesterday and Shakespeare and our Green Cheek Conure Jasper both LOVED it! If anybody asks me "why does the caged bird sing", I'll tell them because of eggbread! |

Hi MaBird and Tom!
Thanks so much for the compliments on Shakespeare! I'd be happy to share my eggbread recipe. I'm just thrilled to find something that both the canary and the conure seem to like. Generally, what one likes the other seems to hate - kind of like kids, I guess. This smells GREAT! Banana Egg Bread 1 box Jiffy Muffin mix 2 really ripe bananas (the more spots on the peel, the better) 1 grated carrot 10 eggs a small splash of milk, I used soy but the cow kind would work (a little less than 1/4 cup, I think) Mash up the bananas with a fork until they sort of dissolved into a paste. Then add the rest of the ingredients and mix well by hand. Pour into a greased 13x9 inch pan and cook according to the Jiffy muffin directions. It took about 18 minutes for it to cook through when tested with a toothpick. After it cools, I cut it into 32 squares. I wrapped them up two to each piece of tin foil and froze them. I thaw them out in the refridgerator over night, then feed it the bird during the week. To serve, I crumble them up into little pieces and put it in a treat cup. One square seems to be making 4 generous servings. Let me know how y'all like this recipe! I want to try it with pumpkin puree instead of the banana one day to see how that works. This might be a good place to use some extra zucchini, too. |

Your Shakespeare is beautiful! After losing my own little canary, Sunny Boy, two months ago, I am now able to read about all the little yellow loves out there without breaking apart completely. I have had 2 cockatiels and was considering a budgie for my next bird, but have decided that when the time comes I will get a canary. My 88 year old husband is in failing health and when I lose him (please God, not soon!) I will have a little yellow feathered companion. I miss the sweet songs, how he would almost crash the gate when I uncovered him in the morning he was so anxious to get onto my hand, the games we played, the conversations we had. I will have that again someday, and for now, enjoy coming here to read about your birds.
