The birds are from different families and continents...the hen has just laid eggs...full stop. They will be infertile.Cross breeding is not a good thing, pure bloodlines are hard enough to keep in captive birds as it is.Any youngsters from a cross...say two different weavers, may be of interest to the owner. But would prove unsaleable.
Paul.

I, too, have noticed the lack of respect for others on this board at times and have made mention of it... why must people make others feel badly to make themselves feel superior? NOT NICE!

Please be courteous to one another... we all share the same love.

Obviously this has caused ruffled feathers, and I cannot speak for Paul, but I can tell you my side of the agreement.

Birds, of all species, are banned from import. Even if they weren't, gouldians, being an endangered species in the wild, would be. The genetic pool that we now have, is all that we will ever have. If we dilute the genes by making hybrid birds, we are losing that bit of genetic knowledge. Most "mule" birds end up sterile, if not in the first generation, in the subsequent generations.

Many people look down on hybrids, some people like them because they are different than what you can normally find. I'm not saying you are "bad" if you make a hybrid, but thinking of the long run, is it good for the species?

There is even controversy of breeding the mutations within a species for the same reason. If we work at breeding the colors that are different from the wild colors. I was reading yesterday that even within the US, the gouldian population has very few birds that don't have some genes for the mutation colors, and because of this, the person who wrote the article is encouraging breeding of the wild colors only.
