Mother Canary had been sitting on her nest for several weeks. I didn't really think to much of it as she has had 2 infertile clutches. I noticed the 2 babies last week, small no feathers so I am assuming that they are 1 week old. The following day one fell from the nest. I have them in a 40" long cage that can be divided but is not at the moment. I picked up the baby who was still breathing and put it back in the nest. I really didn't expect it to live but it is still going. I have noticed both Mom and Dad feeding the babies and up until yesterday Mom was sitting on the nest at night but so so in the day time. The babies have had feathers for a couple of days now. Is the Mother supposed to be still on the nest at night or not because it is summer and they have feathers? I am feeding them (Mom and Dad) one dish of seeds, one dish of small colored pellets which I don't think they touch. I also have a dish of food for color feeding as Mom is a red canary. I have tried hard boiled eggs and carrots and cottage cheese cut up and mixed together but they wouldn't touch it. I even tried it without the cottage cheese. Yesterday I put the carrots and mixed it with brocolli and they ate that. If I put brocolli alone they will eat it. I tried this AM to mix brocolli and carrots and egg and see if they will eat that. Will check after work on that. I have a dish of nestling food but unless I put it over something like seed they don't touch that. Everything is on the cage bars and not on the floor. Should I be feeding them something different? Also when do I have to worry about feeding the babies? Do I give them the nestling food? Do I have to separate the babies from Mom and Dad? Do I separate Mom and Dad. Right now everybody is getting along great. I do see some nesting string on the bottom of the cage but no sign of a nest. Thanks for all your advice.

I thought I would update my posting as I see there have been people viewing but no replys. I call my avian vet and decided to post her replys as they might be useful to those of you who have canaries with eggs and are not sure what you should be doing after they hatch. The birds seem to be pretty self sufficient.
1) FOOD - As far as food goes for the parents she told me to get "Cede" from a bird store. It should be readily available. I told her I was feeding them nestling food and she said this was the better way to go. (I get my bird food from a couple of stores in my area and nestling food is what was on the bag, no brand name.) She also said to feed them 1/2 a hard boiled egg per day. I should quarter it and feed it a quarter in the morning and a quarter late afternoon or when I get home from work. She said I didn't even have to chop it up though I did a bit this AM. She also said to pick up any vegetables etc. from the cage when I get home from work. Mixing the egg with carrots, brocolli ok but she would forget the cottage cheese. (I had read this is a canary book.) (I did get my birds to finally eat the carrot, egg mix by putting finely chopped up brocolli on top of the mixture.) 2) NOT SITTING ON NEST - The vet said the babies were fine even though the Mom is not sitting on the nest. They have feathers. She wanted to know if the parents were feeding and I told her I had seen both parents feeding last week and as of yesterday both birds were alive. She said as long as the parents were feeding not to worry about the Mom sitting on the nest. The mother will not sit all the time. She also said if the Mother quits feeding the birds the dad will feed them. 3) PUTTING FOOD ON BOTTOM OF CAGE FOR BABIES. The parents or Dad (if Mom stops) will feed the babies. They will also show them where the food and water is so I don't need to do any special food on bottom of cage. Parents will feed them and show them the food when they are ready. 3) PICKING UP BABIES - I asked her if I should be picking up the babies to check on splaid (?) legs. She said no. Splaid legs is more of a problem in parrots then canaries. The Mom will tuck the babies legs in. Basically as long as I feed them hardboiled eggs, brocolli, vegies and the CEDE I should be ok. I hope this helps some of you. PS I think I should let you know that I have a full time job that is not in the home. Those of you that are home can do thing different like pick up vegies after a few hours, etc. |
