Help! Canary Heavy Molt?

Hi, I just got home today after a two weeks and my mother's canary is looking very rough. He is a two year old fife. He has molted so much that EVERY secondary feather is a pin and OVER HALF of the primaries as missing as well. Overall he looks very ragged.

I saw red on his wing (blood feathers) and caught him to check that it wasn't a tumor (had a finch with one). Just holding him he lost four primaries, and this was without struggling, they were loose! ow he is sitting all puffed up, I presume from catching him. He is still eatting seed and greens, and is responsive

We just lost a canary last year to a seizure disorder, and the breeder gave this bird to us as a replacement. I really don't want this bird to die on me, and my mother would be crushed (again). I am going to start with vitamins in his water tonight. Is this normal for a male canary or do I need to take a trip to the vet on monday?

I would say its a very bad moult. I would keep him very warm. Put a heat lamp next to him. And definately put him on some multi~vitamins containing iodine
The key to all of this is to keep him as calm as possible, warm and offering a balancdiet with the vitamins supplementing it.
Moulting is normal. Bad moulting is normal as long as he recuperates from it and it doest happen every time he moults (being that bad)
If it doesn't get any better within the next two to four weeks, visit an avian vet.
However, if you think he is overly stressed and not eating or drinking I would take him to a vet asap

Thanks, the heat lamp is a good idea. I have him on the multi-vitamins and he is eating hard boiled egg in addition to his greens. I wanted to be sure that he got enough protein. We just got him this winter so I'm not sure if this molt is normal for him or not. I'll take him to the vet if he doesn't look any better next week.

He currently looks like he got in a fight with a weed wacker! At the moment he only has one tail feather!

Please put him a boiled egg every day!! There's nothing to worry about as long as he's eating normal!!! He will be very still , very scared of you & not sing it's normal as long as he's not sleeping!!
My canary looses alot of feathers during his moult!! the important thing is to keep him a clean bath in the cage at all times so he can dive in whenever he's bothered & boiled egg everyday so his feathers would grow faster!!

My bird's tail feathers go away during his moult too he looks very tiny & messy!!!
Tell me how everything is going!! He also needs some sun!! for vitamin D!!! please make sure he gets some!!
