Question New canary lover saying hello

Hello everyone. My name is Melle and Canaryjoy is the nickname I use here. I`ve recently come across two baby canaries given to me by a friend of mine who decided to try her hand at breeding. I think I have a male and female from the way their sounds are but I`m not sure because they are now almost 2 months old. The pictures I have are when they were 5 weeks old but I have new ones I will post soon.

So the male`s name is Lord Valentino and the female`s name is Lady Marguerite. If I have made a mistake on the sex, I`ll change the name later on. I`ve read a few books from the library and have the biggest cage I could afford but I am looking to buy a aviery next year if I can afford it. I`ll go browse the boards and ask questions as I need to.

One question I do have right now is that ...can I put artificial plants in the cage for a little color?.....

Thank you and looking forward to meeting other canary lovers.

Hi There,
Welcome to this forum!!
They're hard to tell if they're female or male at this age, because females sing like the males before the age of 1. And a male may not sing before he is one year old!!

When I first started having pets I had 2 canaries whom I thought were male & female one would sing & the other didn't, turned out they were both females I only found out when they laid eggs!!

So you cannot possibly be sure till they're 1 year old!! They're at a perfect age now to be tamed, you will enjoy it!!
They're bossy little creatures!!!
Welcome again!!
Regards,
Zeina

Question Hi Zeina

Hi Zeina and thanks for the welcome. Ì`m not sure yet what you mean by tame and what we can do with canaries. I`ve read a few books here and there from the library on canary care but I still have lots of questions.

They are little cuties for sure.

My Dad had a Canary who he actually took out every morning to garden. The canary (Alfonso) would just fly around his head, sit on the perch and when my Dad would whistle he would always fly down and sit on his shoulder. Alfonso was so very smart, he did loads of tricks and knew us all. My dad would say go to so an so and Alfonso would
fly to them.

They are really amazing and so very beautiful. I remember that Alfonso always had the most beautiful melody. Alfonso lived for 17 years. I was 5 when he came to live with us and 22 when he passed. He had a very long and enriched life!

Wow what an amazing canary to be able to take it outside and everything. I`m not sure my canaries could do that cause I live in a 3rd floor apartment but it does sound like fun though. I love the little critters and try to take good care of them.

Welcome to the board. Good to have you!
Although my canaries are not really trained, I have found that they have trained me!
If I do this whistle like Chipper does when he is warming up to sing, he will copy it and I will do it again and he will do it back, this goes on for a while until he breaks out into song and I can no longer keep up with him...just a little game we play. Also when Chipper is out during free flight time...if he just see's the green net that I use to have to try to catch him in to return him to his cage, he flies straight into his cage...no need to use the net anymore...that is kind of like trained right?
And lil Missy..My female...will return to her cage..when she is in his cage just hanging out and I am ready for them to go to sleep if I just start to cup her...
So that is the extent of their training...but I think that it is quiet a lot!
If I handle them their hearts are beating so fast, that I only do it to trim their nails. I don't want to stress them out to bad.

Ohh thank you for the tip. I haven`t started letting them out yet. One flew out last week and I had a heck of a time catching him. He was hitting himself on the wall so I just stopped until he landed somewhere and I put a small towel close to him and caught him that way. I have since then bought a net so I`ll be more prepared next time.
