Thumbs down Breeding problem?

I have a pair of canaries in a cage for a month now and they don't do a thing. Not even the nest. I gave them 3 nests and they look like they don't want to breed. The female is suppose to lay eggs even without a male. They do well together but still, no results. Am i rush or something? The guy who gave me this pair (100% pair) said that the female was ready to lay eggs and both birds are 2008 offspring (May is the month, i think)

I agree, they are way to young.give them a year to relax and then try.
take it easy on the birds, not all get it right on the first try.
I wouldn't breed for profit, you won't make good money that way and most goes in feed and care for the birds.

Canaries should be at least a year old before they should be mated. They might mate sooner but you will not have any fertile eggs. Trust me, I have tried. I have read many books and done a lot of research of the internet and talked to many people on these forums. They are just too young! I know that it is hard to wait, but you must be patient.

The age of your canaries is not the problem. My first question would be WHY are you wanting to breed birds? If you just put them together in a cage with a nest, you are not nearly as ready to responsibly breed birds as your "handle" and your "breeding is wonderful" tag would suggest. Your canaries are probably getting ready to molt, if they haven't started already. Getting the birds ready for breeding is a year round effort, at the very least, starting in late winter. How much light your bird gets is important, food variety and type is important, wether the birds are compatable is important. There is so much that you obviously need to research that if you are successful in getting eggs out of the hen, they will be infertile or worse yet, dangerous for the hen. Please go to canarynet.nest and READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION THERE BEFORE you attempt to breed canaries. Join that list, there are lots of people on there who will assist a novice canary breeder such as yourself, but only if you are willing to do it the right way, responsibly.
