The vet issue is a touchy one. One thing I wonder is, for something tiny like a finch, wouldn't it be awfully stressful to the bird, to transport it somewhere and have it handled, especially when it is sick?
I raise pigeons, and hardly anyone I know takes their birds to a vet when they are sick. One thing that is helpful though is to send in sample of the sick bird's droppings for analysis. The vet can often identify the illness by examining the droppings, and can do a sensitivity test to determine which medicine will be effective.
