Gouldian Chicks!!

Both of my pairs have nested, and chicks are hatching!! The top pair had a total of 7 eggs, 1 not fertile, 6 hatched, and unfortunately we lost 2 early on. The pair is a BH/PB/GB hen and RH/PB/GB cock

Here is a photo of the oldest, and youngest from that nest. The photo was taken on 8/31/09. Chick on left hatched 8/24/09 Chick on right hatched 8/29/09:

The bottom nest is a RH/PB/GB hen and a dilute YH/PB cock. I'm hoping that I will have some dilute and yellow chicks from this clutch. Their chicks started hatching today. 5 eggs out of 6 were fertile from this pair. I will take photos of them when I band in about 5-6 days.

Congratulations. I love Gouldian Finches. If I could find a pair around here I would buy them. Good luck. I hope all do well.

You're welcome Holly! They are the family favorite here. The tiels and IRN love them as much as my husband does! lol

Tom, if you ever come out this way let me know and you can have a deal on some!! If you want me to search on the NFSS for breeders in your area, let me know.

I'll update with photos as they get older. Luckily my pairs are used to me in the cages, so I can mess with the nests more than other breeders. My last clutch had three that would sit in your hand as long as you gave them skritches. This would be 45+ minutes with one of the males.

The blue breasted hen in my sig line was part of that clutch.

Congrats! I'm a gould lover as well, and they're tough to find here too. I lucked out and found one at a pet store a couple years ago but haven't found any within driving distance since.

Well, I don't have photos as they are too small to pick up safely, but the bottom nest has at least one yellow chick!! There is still one egg that needs to hatch. The difference between this girl and the regular gouldians is astonishing and really easy to see, even in their just hatched form. Her eyes are not as dark and the nodules on her beak are a different color.

Thank you. They are really sweet little birds. I promise to update the photos with all the chicks (both clutches) once I band the rest of them. After that I'll try to get photos once a week or so if you guys want to see.

They are so tiny! Gouldians are gorgeous birds. If I didn't have cats, I would have some. Finches are neat little birds.
