I killed one of my Java Finches

Argh! I am so mad at myself and so sad. I let the finches out for a fly around when I cleaned their cage because it is less stressful for them. I usually leave them out until the end of the day when they just go back in themselves to eat and drink and sleep.

Well I forgot to put the lid back on one of my fighter fish bowls when i fed them yesterday morning. And one of the finches drowned.

The other one is sitting on the shelf where its friend died chirping for it.

Do I need to buy him a friend? Will he be sad and depressed now? They were both males but he is the only one now.

I am really sad and mad at myself that I did this but at the same time I am shamefully glad that it was one of the finches and not one of my parrots. Even though I have had the finches for 2.5 years it is still not the same...

Im sorry to hear about your finch - sometimes we just make mistakes, its not your fault. I know its hard to believe that these things do happen, but they do. Nobody's perfect. & the poor birdie calling out for his friend!! = ( If they were a bonded pair then your remaining finch will probably be more sad without him, in this case I would suggest getting another friend. At the same time, there's no guarantee they will get along or be as close as he was with the other bird. Im sorry, I know this is hard for you ((hugs))

Sorry to hear about your Finch drowning. It is a rotten bit of luck. A friend of mine had a pair of Finches for five years. She also has five cats, a dog, and some Gold Fish. She always lamented the fact that the Finches stayed in one room by themselves due to the cats. In fact, she offered to give me the Finches last February for this reason. She said they had no interaction with the family except once per day whence they were fed and the cage was cleaned.

Well, she could not part with the Finches despite all of this, although she kept saying she was going to give them to me. At one point she moved them to another room in the house which had slightly, albeit not too much, more use. Then, one day, somehow, one of the cats got into the room and knocked the cage over. She found the two Finches dead on the floor. The cat never touched them. I suppose they either died of fright, or the shock of the cage hitting the floor killed them. Either way, she cried for a couple of days because she felt so guilty. She is over it now, but she felt really rotten for a few days, as I am sure you will too. At least the accident has taught you a lesson, and you will be more careful in future.

I'm so sorry, Andie. Don't blame yourself, though. Like LovelySydney said, sometimes these things happen..

Sorry to hear about that Andie, accidents happen so try not to beat yourself up about it.
Finches are very gregarious and only do well in the company of others, I wouldn't wait around too long before getting him another friend.
I'm sure they will be fine but just watch them for a day or so to make sure they don't fight.

If it had to be one bird over the other I'm glad it was one of your finches as well...if I lost my parrot I'd be totally bummed out...but a little finch I'd still bummed but would replace it soon and know that accidents happen.
