Advice about a new kitten.

hi,my sister who i share a house with just brought home a new ginger kitten yesterday and i need some advice about the birds, should i try to introduce him to them slowly(never out of their cages of course)so he can get used to them or should i try to make sure he's never allowed into the room with them??

IF the birds are in a separate room from the cat, I'd leave well enough alone and make sure the cat never gets in there. Cats are awfully smart and have a great sense of smell, let alone hearing. They will know the bird is in the room irrespective.
An introduction will only peak your cat's interest in the birds and that is rarely a good thing. Kittens or cats....they are all natural enemies for birds. I keep mine separate. For a while, they did share the same space but the birds were always WAY out of reach. Still, the cats never lost interest, I'm afraid...they were always waiting for that moment when they might be able to get at them ( thankfully, that never came!!)
Besides, if your birds are little birds, they really would never stand a chance against a cat. And you probably don't really want to be freaking your birds out by having them have to see your kitty. Even within the safety of their cage, they'll get antsy with the kitty around.
my 2 cents...

I can't see from your pics what kind of birds you have. I've got a linnie and a grey and three cats. The cats could care less about my grey. When we first got her they were all interested but a few squirts of a waterbottle fixed that. She's too big to really be considered "food" although they are all interested when she flies.

You need to be strict from the get-go about the birds being off limits.

Our linnie was a little problematic because the day we got him my troublemaker cat decided to jump on his cage which made it come apart and sent the linnie flying into the kitchen. Now, the cats will go up to his cage and he's a fiestly little thing- he gets right in their faces and bites their noses. They are never out alone together and when the linnie is out he is on my shoulder.

I agree with shosh- best thing to do is not to make a big deal out of a formal introduction and be vigilant with discipline. You're gonna be a little wishy washy at first because its a new fuzzy little kitty but remember your fuzzy little kitty will eat your bird without thinking twice. And not feel any remorse at all. For real.

i have an ringneck a rosella and a conure,he's been here about a month now and he's only been in the room with the birds a few times, never by himself,he is interested in them but they arent really afraid of him and the conure tries to bite him on the nose which freaks him out a bit,i might use the squirty bottle if he takes too much interest in them.

I advise you to keep the kitten well observed! At a friends house they adopted 2 new cats who seemed dosile and quiet. When they went out one day they invited a friend to watch the house. This friend fell asleep and the two cats totally raided the finch cage. They managed to kill 6 out of 7 finches while the friend was alseep in the same room!!!

So be careful!

I have 2 cats, 2 kittens with 5 cockatiels and 2 budgies. They are never allowed in the same room unsupervised.

Good luck!!
