Can I feed my tiel something else?

Hi. I have got a question here.

I always buy my tiel the cockatiel mix and Im just wondering can I but my tiel the budgie mix instead? My tiel first of all I think does not like the sunflower seeds and other seeds which are really hard to cut open and second it is a very waste of seeds everyday of what I have to throw away. My tiel only seems to eat the little seeds and seeds which are really easy to peel open. Can I buy my tiel the budgie mix instead? Would they survive with that? I also give my tiel in his bowl an sliced apple and some peas as well and other mineral food.

Its just that I think it is a waste of buying something which the tiel is not going to eat..

Smile Yes!!

Hi, Yellow!!! You know me as jaxtiellover . The people I bought Morris and Maddie from fed all their tiels only Vita-parakeet for the same reason. It is also reccomended for breeder birds to start feeding their young b/c it doesn't have the harder to open seeds. Budgies and parakeets are much the same, so I would imagine the food would be fine for Daizy. You offer her fresh fruits and veggies, too, so she really should be fine on budgie food. Sunflower seeds have too much fat and a bird that really likes them should be limited becuase it will fill up on them too fast and not get other important nutrients from other foods.

Oh Hey Jaxtiellover!!! Didn't realize it was you, glad to see you made it on over!!!

I feed my birds (from budgies and bourkes, to cockatiels and a conure) either Sweet Harvest Cockatiel no sun seed (good mix, has some safflower in it), or Sweet and Sassy Garden Variety Budgie mix (actually, haven't gotten to that yet... still have Sweet Harvest to finish up on...). Both of dried foods added (one more than the other), though the Sweet Harvest has safflower, the S&S does not... I'm not sure how my conure will take to the S&S though I may need to buy an extra bag of larger foods for her...

In the least bit though, I feed all my birds basically a 'budgie diet', as it has no large seeds in the mix other than safflower seeds. Even at that, the tiels wont always eat the safflower seeds! So indeed, if you can find a good budgie mix, use it instead! Plus, lots of fresh foods!
