It probably depends on the situation.... If you read the 'Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill' by Mark Bittner (about cherry heads, a mitred, and some blue crown conures) you'd be able to learn more about 'inside the flock' out in the 'wild'.
Scientists thought that birds mated for life, but in more recent years have found out that they can and will separate and find new mates... Sometimes in the wild, two males may fight for a chosen female. Some may right up and leave their mate and choose another. In budgies, the males may often times be cheating on their mates! I have heard of breeders and hobbiest breeders letting birds either choose their own mates, or putting two birds together and 'forcing' them to breed together... I have heard once that some breeders may put one male and two females in one cage, usually not recommended... Some males just tend to be more or less loyal to their mates....
