Sigh...3rd Home in a week!

I just get so upset when I think about this.

I was talking to a friend 3 days ago on the phone when she told me that her sister-in-law had purchased a tiel. Upon bringing the tiel home, the sister-in-law was informed, by her hubby, that the tiel had to go! (They own a motel, which they also reside in). So the husband, after much heated discussion, takes the tiel down to the reservation desk, and asks the manager to get rid of it. The manager, not knowing what to do, give the tiel to a guest staying in the motel. The guest being a man, rooming with several others I guess.

So, back to the phone conversation with my friend. She informs me that these men are from out of town and staying in the motel, because they had a temporary job locally. She also mentioned that they were filthy! I had a fit!

Since I have two cinnamon conures, which are my babies, I figured the tiel would require the same undivided love and attention for a happy and loving life. I begged her to make up any excuse to get the tiel back and give him/her to me. Thank goodness she successful!

I brought the baby home, and isolated him in the spare room... the poor baby was scared to death! I also noticed some blood spots on the wing, which i cleaned off, and didnt see anymore, so I thought the baby was fine. But about 30 minutes later, I noticed that there was more blood. ( I think i took the scab off the feather on cleaning it.) I ran down to the pet store that a friend of mine owns to get some styptic powder for the bleeding and during a brief conversation with her, realized the baby tiel was purchased there. Thank goodness!

The men had taken the baby tiel, tried to keep it from flying and did a chop job on the wings... both the flight and landing feathers were unevely cut with rough edges and cut with something not very sharp. Also, it was cut so short, that all the baby had to do was flap in the cage and beat the wings on the cage.. while the men were trying to get it out, and it started to bleed.

Well the baby is home, with me now..but in horrible shock! For pete's sake, it's only 10 weeks old! Oh I get so angry with ignorant people!

Took me all Friday night, up with the baby to make sure the bleeding had stopped completely and the powder was still on the feather. Then the baby wouldn't eat, so another day, of offering millet, fruit, berries, and seeds. I leave the cage door open so that the baby can come out at his comfort, even peeked out of the cage a couple times! Yayyyy...!

My girlfriend, the owner of the pet store, came by to see the tiel and couldnt believe it was the same one. She said that the baby was such a lover in the shop...she's very attentive and loving to them all... It was difficult for her to believe the baby could have suffered such pain and trauma in just a few days!

I guess I had to vent..I'm just so irrate!... Please, if any of you can offer any advice, my ears and heart are open. Is there anything I can do to help my baby come out of his shell?

Sounds like the poor tiel had a horrible experience at the hands of ignorant brutes. Patience is all that sweet bird needs. Sounds like you have that in abundance. I'm so glad it found its way to you!

Keep us posted, please. Would love to hear how this little one gets on as time passes.

With my Prinny she was very scared, especially of fingers (still is a little bit and she still doesn't care for strangers). I just gave her time and space. I talked to her with her cage door open and let her decide when she wanted to come out. I also found that she loves millet and so everynight I would give her a little and everytime I would shorten the length of the piece of millet until I was holding it in my hand. Over the past 2 months she has really come around and now runs to the bottom of her cage to get to me when I come home. She loves scritches and will put her head down everytime I walk up to her so she can have some. She is afraid of strangers or changes (like when I straightened my hair this weekend I got hissed at and she tried to bite me, but I think she was confused because she loves to play in my hair). Since it is still a baby I think it will be easier to rehabilitate it and to help her learn to trust. Are you planning on keeping her permently?

OMG... that poor thing... i guess i'm still always surprised about the cruelty people can display against such innocent creatures like a BABY bird....

but... the bottom line is - thank god you were involved in the whole thing.... at least the baby found a place to stay where it's loved and properly cared for.... all i can say, is to be patient with the baby... even a non-traumatic location change is hard for birds.... (ie boarding at the vet - takes about a week to get back to normal, at least with our stinkies).... so adding in the trauma, you might have to work with it for a little while before s/he starts building up trust again.... but i'm confident that you'll sooner than later be surprised by a loving snuggle and a curious baby peeking out of the cage...

kudos to you for taking him/her in!!!!

Poor baby! You might try adding a few drops of Rescue Remedy to its water and misting its feathers with distilled water with a few drops of aloe juice added to it. It will help. If you don't have any aloe juice, pm me with your address and I will mail you some aloe leaves that you can squeeze the gel out of and mix with distilled water. I keep a huge pot of aloe plants on my porch-its good for all kinds of things.

Baby is lucky to have found you! I'm trying to learn not to be too crazy about all the horrid folks in the world who don't deserve pets (or children, but I digress) and just focus on the animals in front of me. Can only save my small corner of the world & hope everyone else does the same. Thanks for helping!

Ginich,

Tried the aloe water... but the baby is still a little leary... so if he looks panicked, I stop. I only squirt a few times with the spray bottle. Thank you so much for the offer of aloe, you're such a sweetie. Last night, I offered him my hand to perch on. He cautiously stepped on it with one foot then pulled back. So I stopped and tried again in about an hour. He did the same thing. Thats progress I think. :)
