Cockatiels and sun conures

Hi everyone i was in the pet store and saw the most prettiest cockatiel in there and i'm thinking of getting him/her and was wondering if a sun conure and cockatiel will get along together?. They will have sperate cages. I just thought if brought up at a young age together its less likely they will fight. If anyone has any information feel free to tell me.I have a niece here that likes handling birds shes only 3 years old is it alright for her to handle the cockatiel with supervisen?.

Birds of different species may fight. I currently have 2 cockatiels, 2 parakeets and 1 caique. My tiels and keets come out together with no problems. I cannot let my caique out with them because she plays too rough and she hates the keets. My caique and the tiels love each other, but my caique likes to jump onto them like she is playing with another caique and the tiels are not built for that, so we do not take them out at the same time. The caique has her own out of the cage playtime.

So long as you understand that they may not get along, and will need separate time out with you, get the cockatiel.

It is okay to allow small children to hold birds, so long as you are there watching closely. Tiels do well with children, generally, so long as the child is quiet and not active when around the tiels, but the conure being a larger bird, I would want to sit right next to her in case the conure decided to nip at the child. Parrots will sometimes do that with children, knowing that they will get a show. Caution is the watch word.

Good luck on your decision. If you decide to get the tiel, you will not be disappointed. Mine are very loving and cuddly, love to whistle and at least my lutino, talk (my whitefaced is too young and has just found her voice).

I'd suggest for you to buy a handraised cockatiel, and yes tiels can do fine with conures. I have Casey and Noel living together, Casey being the tiel, Noel being the cherry head conure. I can't really separate them too easily without one getting upset.

Clyde, the other tiel, however, has his own cage as Noel and Clyde do not share a bond such as Casey and her. The tiels however do fine with the budgies and bourkes (though the b & bs are afraid of Clyde, they don't mind Casey).

If you are really interested in a tiel, I'd say go ahead and buy one!!! Just try to find one that has been handraised as this'll be easier on you and less possibilities for the tiel to bite (depending on what birds it has been around, how it was raised, and from the day it was handraised).

I have a 2 yr. old sun conure, and a 1 yr. old female cockateil and they get along great. Matter of face my sun conure seems to like all my birds. Make sure you teil is hand tamed, that way he or she will be tammer most likely with the rest of your birds including your conure. Good luck.

I agree that handfed would be best. I handfeed all my cockatiel chicks until they are about 12 to 14 weeks. (I let them wean in their own time). I have both parent raised adults and handraised adults. Both can be tamed, both can bite. But I have noticed that the parent raised ones tend to be MORE nippy and take longer to tame. I can pet all my hand raised ones, but only one parent raised one will tolerate touching anywhere other than the feet touching.
