I wouldn't let my tiel eat any kind of acrylic paints, instead I would use a food-dye.
The cage looks pretty nice, but I had trouble with 3/4 inch spacing being too big for my rather petite teil (she was sticking her head through), so I went with 1/2 inch spacing. But quite honestly I don't know anything about cage construction, safety of material or safety of the build. However, it's nice that you like to build things for your tiels. It is my belief that my tiel prefers yellow and orange, like her own face colors.

I'm not sure what you could use for the base. Maybe you could find a plastic tray that is big enough. I agree about the acrylic paint, I would use food dye as well. It's easy and the colors turn out really well. All birds have colors that they like more than others so use all colors. I have one tiel whose favorite color is green, another is red, some like blue and some don't really care.

I have a question -- the plastic netting, what type of plastic and how easy will it be for them to shred, since they love to shred stuff. I would wonder how long it will take to become shred material! And don't use acrylic paints -- use the food dyes. Acrylic paint will come off when they mouth it. You might try to get a plastic or metal bottom that will fit -- there are places that can make metal for you. And plastic -- look for the top of totes that you can put in there.

Any teil i have ever had will have chewed right thru the netting. Mine could go thru those little plastic chain links in no time and they are thicker than the netting

Honestly, that cage looks scary and unsafe. Plus, the cage bars are going to be horrible for the birds to move around on. If you look at bird cages that are sold in stores, they have actual cage bars (not a grid like yours has). The bars allow the bird to slide around. Birds love sliding around their beaks on the bars. Plus, a dometop lets your bird climb on angles and upside down. I would highly recommend just going out and buying a nice cage.

It is also too small. I would not house any birds in it. Plastic netting is unsafe and the edges look like they can cut, corners catch toenails. No easy access to open and close, no outside access for food and water.

Nobody is picking on him... he has asked for advice/opinion... it just so happens he has received the same response from the last seven people. The cage does look to be "un-safe" and the mesh netting can be chewed through. Wouldnt you agree? As far as taking a wrong turn in this forum... if you were to ask a question or an opinion wouldnt you want the "honest" truth? Everybody here loves the companionship they have with their birds and love birds in general... we are all here for the same reason. There is alot of wisdom and experience on this board. If an opinion is asked of... it will honestly be given. I myself have asked questions here and in the end was not happy with the responses I received but I appreciated the honesty.
