Odd behavior

I've had several tiels before but my two boys have the oddest behavior. I don't know if its some kind of courtship or display behavior or what, and I've only seen them do it twice in the year I've had them.

They'll both stand on top of their cage and Cyrano, the smaller, less dominant pied male, will repeat this call over and over again very deliberately. Every time he starts the call, both males will open their wings to their full extension, hold there a moment, then close their wings again as the call ends. Then they'll wait a second or two, and do it all over again, about ten or fifteen times. It's like they're posing or sychronize dancing!

My other tiels have always been hens, so this is my first time watching male behavior. I've seen them do the normal 'heart wings' thing before but this is something entirely different. So enlighten the ignorant *laugh* Is this courtship, a sort of dominance display, or do they just have an odd quirk they do for fun?

You know what, I have no idea. I have never seen any of my males do this until my baby Bugsy started doing it only he doesn't call when he is doing it. He will go to the bottom of the cage, run a few steps, wings up, hold, wings down, run a few steps....well, you get the picture. He does it for about 15 minutes at a time and while there are other birds in the cage with him they are not around him when he does it. He will also do it on the top of the cage sometimes. I think it might be a dominance thing, I'm bigger than you kind of thing but I'm not really sure. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has an odd bird, lol.

Weird. I keep wanting to get a vid of it but of course they so rarely do it and usually by the time I find my camera and get it out, they're done. My submissive male always starts it, and he's always the one calling. Don Juan, who is definately dominant, only does the wing stretches in time with Cyrano. Sometimes they'll face each other, and at times they'll be side by side.

Hopefully one day I'll get a vid of my 'sync dancing' tiels!

See, mine does it almost every day. He is a goofball though and a bit odd. He also talks and sing in his food dish so that it will echo a little bit...I hope you do get it on video, that is something I would love to see, lol
