Exclamation Screaming! Help needed please

My tiel Dandy has never been very loud only occasionally. The last week it is almost non stop and very loud and just getting worse. I took her to the vet a couple of weeks ago because she was molting very badly and he said he thought she was hormonal also. She yells non stop I have read several places to ignore them when they yell but she just won't stop. As far as I can see all her needs are being met. She seems happy before this. Any suggestions she's killing my ears and we live in an apartment and I'm so afraid she's going to disturb the neighbors. I haven't re located her cage or done anything differently. It is very hot now and the days are longer but today it was 105 here but I kept it cool inside. And she's not showing any signs of being hot.

Sounds like hormones. She needs at least 12 hours of darkness and sleep daily. This will help reduce the hormones and the screaming. Light increases hormone production and mating behavior. She is calling for a mate. I use an old sheet that is dark marroon to cover my tiels. Once I started increasing the nighttime, the yelling stopped.

Another suggestion is to try establishing a contact call, so that you can whistle back when she whistles it. This works with our tiels. If they start screaming, we'll whistle the call and they'll stop and whistle back and move on to another project.

You may also find that adding Avicalm to her water will bring her down a few notches. It is made with the active ingredient in green tea. You can purchase it online at www.avitic.com. I'm currently using it on 2 pluckers and am quite happy with the results.

Tiel

She could also just be bored to death and wants out of the cage.

How much out of cage/snuggle time does your tiel get per day?

Does your tiel still do it when she is out?

How many tiels do you own?

Everything unexplained that goes on with a bird usually gets blamed on hormones when it's usually something simple like the bird needing somthing that you are not giving it like more 1 on 1 time or time out of the cage.

Remember birds are just as smart as a human and they can change their minds about what they like/dislike, want/don't want, Their fears change as well as agression and it could be just because They decide it's time for somthing new.

Try a few things like spending more time with the bird even if it's just watching TV and eating popcorn together.

Do whatever works for your bird i am sure it's just something you are overlooking because birds don't scream for no reason hormonal or not if they did they would all be eaten in the wild because a quiet bird is a bird that lives longer.

Excellent advice. I have never had any screamers, so I guess they are all pretty happy here.

I have a couple of screamers that came in as so called hormonal birds but they are in fact just attention junkies and need more one on one time.

I have seen a ton of hormonal birds and one thing is clear, with added attention, good food, sunlight, sleep from dark to dawn and plenty of out of cage time they all calm down for the most part.

attention, light, food and sleep are the largest factors when it comes to breeding age birds if you want to keep them healthy, hours of sleep matter so much because birds have a more active internal clock than we do and usually will wake up at dawn or close to it even when covered unless they are not getting to sleep at an early enough hour.

LOL i need to learn when to stop typing hehehehe

Nancy - The Avicalm more info says:

In researching the literature, however, we found that the potency of L-Theanine is amplified by B vitamins and lethicin. Therefore, AviCalm must be given together with our Featheriffic supplement. We mix them together and place place in a small pile on top of our pellet/seed mixture. (Our birds love the sweet corn flavor of Featheriffic! and they eat it immediately - even before they eat the rest of their food.) In about 1/2 hour, they start to calm down.

Do you use with featheriffic or does it do well by itself and a very balanced diet?
