Tiels and budgies

Hi!

I got a big cage for my budgies. I have been contemplating getting a Tiel for my cage too. The cage is about 100x100x50 cm. Is this enough and will the Tiel get along with the budgies?

It is not a good idea to mix the species. Budgies have been known to attack and severely injure or kill tiels. Any new bird should be segregated from your flock for a month to prevent spread of any illnesses the new one could be harbouring without showing any signs.

I wouldn't put a cockatiel with budgies. They might attack the tiel. If you want a tiel you better get another cage. My friend had a cockatiel and budgie, they hated each other and fight. Her cockatiel got hurt from her budgie.

Well there was a quote on a board (here, I believe) that cooping up a 'tiel with budgies was like putting a too-cool-for-school teenager in a room with a bunch of hyper five-year-olds and locking them in there.

(Budgies may be smaller than 'tiels, but 'tiels are a lot calmer than them and remember, size does not mean victory!)

Just about all budgie and 'tiel owners I know recommend NEVER keeping them in the same cage and only a few have them out together, and even if they are out together they are very carefully watched

It is incorrect that "all" birds dont get on just because they are mix species, even if it is quite a rarity.

I had two tiels and a budgie. Bluie [budgie] used to migrate to their cage at 'play time' and formed quite a bond with my yellow tiel, May.

This was fine by me as there was NO fighting, squabbling or bullying, which ment my more friendlier tiel, April, returned back to being my little buddy.

May sadly died 3 years later, and Bluie went into a depressed state. I got another budgie to keep him company which didnt work at all.

In the end, April and Bluie lived together in their cage. Bluie was the more dominant one, however April had always been a not very dominant bird. They got on fine as anything and were good friends. Shared their food, toys, etc.

Sadly i lost April in march this year, so bought a Conure who Bluie quite disliked. This wasnt much of a problem as my conure, Leo had his own much bigger cage, however they didnt bother eachother from then on.

Sadly a few days ago i had to have Bluie put to sleep.

Bluie was 9 and April was 13 when he was put to sleep also. They got on for 9 years together, with no problems.

Although it is very rare for it to happen, it is possible ;)

My budgies sleep in a separate cage. They have bonded with my tiels & play outside the cages together & preen each other, but the budgies have, on occasion, attacked the tiels. I wouldn't mix them, even now that I've had them for a while.

Yes, birds DO get along with other birds, although not always, they do. Oliver, parrotlet, and Emi, budgie, are best friends. They snuggle and eat together and play together and now I literally have to have them housed together because I get bit when trying to separate them. Or when they are a part they "cry" - literally, shrieking in my house, LOL. They know how to get what they want ; ) Anyway, I did not just place them together, I watched them outside the cage and made sure they werent fighting or trying to kill one another. All my birds have nearly constant out of cage time because someone is always home so they really had enough room to not bother each other.

ALl that being said, before placing any birds together, even ones of the same species, it is best to observe and keep observing. Accidents can happen too quickly.
