Are cockatiels noisy birds?

I'll be acquiring a 'tiel on Saturday and I'm not aloud to have any noisy pets in my household. So will my 'tiel let everyone sleep at night?

They don't usually call during the night, especially if it's dark or they have a cover on, It's unnatural to make sounds in the dark as in the wild a nocturnal predator would find them and kill them. If you teach the bird to talk and whistle lovely tunes instead of doing bird calls, the noise level will be reduced but be aware tht cockatiels CAN and WILL be loud during the day at times.

Cockatiels are pretty good at being noisey. And not in a volume kind of way, like a large parrot screaming, but in a constant noise way. The love to whistle and carry on. I also have 2 and they flock call to one another and feed off the other ones whistles and sqwaks. But like Ashling said, if you teach them to whistle tunes it makes it much more fun to listen to the constant noise!

I live in an apartment & my adjacent neighbors are also my friends... she says she NEVER hears my birds. (her words, "and if I did hear them I probably assumed it was a wild bird.")

My two are totally quiet half the day... but if someone comes to the door they give an alarm that is decently loud and lasts until the door closes again, if they want to play they chirp at me sweetly.
Holly used to "flock call" me when I walked out of a room, but she's learned that I will be right back & stopped doing it.
Holly has her very soft quiet, constant chirps when she is hormonal, Meena likes to whistle at Holly when he's frisky... (separate cages, lol... 2 of the same sex would be so much easier.)
Meena is a Male and he likes to sing... (umm... TRY to sing). Holly, female, not so much.
They both chatter a bit first thing in the morning & late in the afternoon, but I LOVE that.

Never a peep at night unless they get scared, but even then its only wings flapping around (and me running to check on them), not squawking.

Are tiels loud... they have their moments once in a while... but I'd have to say they are quiet birds.

Yes, cockatiels can be noisy at times. However, 5 of my budgies can make a far louder and less appealing noise than my 6 cockatiels put together. The more cocks you have, the more noise there will be. When I had 4 of each, there was twice as much noise as there is now that I have 4 hens and only 2 cocks.

I have 10 Cockatiels, 5 males and 5 (might be 4) females. I can walk around the corner from my house to the street across the road and still hear the males. The females are much quieter, though they do tend to get loud when they want to.. just not as loud as the males.

I have a female and I wouldn't consider her noisy. She tweets, especially when she is excited when we come home or is out for her daily fly-bys. We do not cover her at night but never hear a peep out of her. I love her noises especially in the winter.

I am concerned that the only question you have asked is "Will the tiel be noisy at night" and that you are getting various answers - some say yes, some say no.

A more correct answer might be that the tiel may or may not make noise (at any time of the day) depending upon the conditions under which it lives - and most importantly - the personality of the tiel.

You, Josh, haven't given any information about how you intend to care for this bird - such as family interaction, other pets, caging, food and sleep hours.

I would not want you to assume that because you have received a number of responses indicating that their birds are not noisy - that you can depend on your tiel not making noise. THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE. And I would not want you to give a home to a tiel (or any bird) with the assumption that it will meet the requirements of your household and then finding otherwise - have to rehome it.

AS I write this, Apollo has been chattering and squealing for about two hours now while Sunny mostly stares at him and occasionally joins in. It is about 10AM. Eventually, Apollo will settle down.

It sounds as though the directive from your family - not allowed to have any noisy pets - is clear. I would be concerned about your bringing a bird into a setting where others have this requirement.

Well said tiel4me. Cockatiels have the ability to be very noisy. My father didn't know this back in the 80's when he purchased my first one for me. While he hated the noise Tweety makes, he knew that it wasn't right to get rid of him for it.

You will not have a happy bird if you find a way to force it to be quiet all the time. At night is a reasonable request, but to do so, you need to have set hours for the bird, and have it active during the day. You also will need a dark, quiet room for the bird. Every once in a while, the bird may make noise at night, but that is usually out of fright.

In addition to that, a rehomed bird may have attachment issues. This can make a bird loud for quite some time. Is your family willing to work on this, or will they say get rid of the bird? If the latter, it would be best for everyone involved to not bring the bird home.

I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but tiels live up to 35 or so years. It is best for them if they do so in a stable enviornment where they will be loved for the bird they are, wheather that be a chatterbox or a quiet love bug.

I currently have three, and I can't honestly tell you whether they are noisy or quiet. Sometimes they go nuts for hours on end, other times we don't hear a peep out of them. It just depends on their moods I guess.

Screaming to other birds is a common thing for my babies. But so is silence. It depends on the bird, and as tiel4me said, conditions in which they live.

If noise level was a problem to begin with, getting a bird probably wasn't the best choice in pets =/
