Hopeful

Kay, so, Taz has been in the nestbox all afternoon.
I tried to peek inside but a) it's up too high and I couldn't open the lid enough to see properly and b) he WOULDN'T get out of the way. Normally he'd run for the hills if I went anywhere near him while he's in the cage so it's a bit weird that he'd just sit there and sway at me rather than bolt out of the entrance and to the other side of the cage.

But I dunno. It's been fairly dark in there all day because the door's been shut, and they weren't outside because it was raining all day so it's been a pretty gloomy, cold, non-springy kind of day, so i'm thinking maybe he was just sleeping in there or something. It's been so dark in there that they'd probably think it was night time.

They were out for five hours from this morning to this afternoon and have been in the cage, in their room since I put them away, and like I said it's been pretty dark in there, and males normally sit on the nest during the day rather than at night.
But i've also heard that sometimes, either the hen or the cock may take on both "shifts" if the female doesn't do her bit.

Is this true?

I'll try to check again tomorrow when it's light enough to be able to see properly.

Well, speaking from a non-breeding female, Bonnie sits on her egg for a few hours, does her bit for a few hours, then goes back to the egg. Lather rinse repeat >.>

Let us know what's up when you get to have a closer look!

A few years back when my two birds had their nesting box, my female would not sit on the eggs for very long. My male bird (now departed) would also do "double duty" sitting on their eggs.

My AV said some birds are just not meant to be mothers, so I didn't try to breed them again after that experience. After she laid the eggs, she didn't seem to be very interested in them. Hope this helps.

Thanks Milletman :D

I managed to get a good look, and there's nothing in there as yet.

Casper doesn't appear to be very interested in going inside the box at the moment, which is a little disheartening, but I think i'm just being impatient haha :D Tia wasn't very interested in going in there either until she was just about ready to lay her first egg.

Time will tell I guess x]
