What do you do when cockatiels kinda scream when you go to get them out of their cage

What do you do when cockatiels kinda scream when you go to get them out of their cage? And what do you do to stop it? When they are tame when you take them out but just when you put your hand into the cage they do that noise at you...Help!

Your cockatiels don't like you. You should just leave them alone.

It sounds like they are just excited. If the vocalization doesn't go on for very long, I would say just let them get it out of their system.

If they are tame, as you say, but only scream when you put your hand in their cage, it's also possible they just don't like you putting your hand in their cage. You could open the door and allow them to come out by themselves rather than putting your hand in there to get them. (Are you asking them to step up, or "grabbing" them to get them out?)

Well said Jenseits. I allow my tiels to come out when they are ready. I open the cage door and then walk away. Mine are tame and flighted, so I know when they are out. I hear them fly over to the other cages to play.

A good way to work on getting them to come out is to hold a favorite treat like millet outside the cage, so they have to come out to get to it.

That was rude and uncalled for. Mind your manners.

I reach in to get them. They do sometimes get out by themselves. But like when you go to get them to put them up they sometimes do that too but normally they are very sweet.

Well, the cage is the cockatiels home enviroment, and they can become alarmed if this hand suddenly comes into their living room when they're trying to eat their perch in peace. This is especially true if your cockatiel thinks that a hand coming into the cage means something bad (like you're going to grab them to put them into a container).

I'm in the process of hand-taming my 'tiel Angel and here's what I do: Angel is a headscritch junkie. I just open the cage door and sit there, watching them. Most of the time, they are curious to see what I'm going to do. Am I coming into the cage? Am I changing the cage? Am I giving them treats? Am I giving Angel a headscritch?

Usually Bonnie goes off high alert first, just wandering off to eat her food and do her thing, while Angel is more hesitant. I let her come down, if she wants, at her own pace and I encourage her to do so in a gentle voice.

A golden rule I think with birds is to let them come to you if there isn't a trust bond yet. If they don't want to do something, don't force them or they will resent it, fear you, and scream whenever you come near their 'safe zone' that is their cage

With my tiels, it depends on their mood. Sometimes I put my hand in and ask Baby or Bertie to step up and Bertie does this shrieking thing but always steps up. It's like her telling me "you're bothering me". Other times, I ask her to step up and not a peep.. she just happily comes out and terrorizes, lol.

Most of the time, they just fly out or climb out and play on the top of their cages. With my females especially... the tend to get a little pms thing going on, lol.

Oh....a note to Shadow190. I find your comments rude and offensive, not just on this thread but on others. You need to take a serious chill pill dude.

honestly, they're probably screaming because they fear you/your hands...possibly because you've grabbed them in the past. so, please refrain from forcing them to do something they don't want to do unless it's absolutely necessary (i.e., for medical care). let them come to you when they want. try leaving the cage door open when you're around and wait to handle them until they're out. and, never forgot that they are intelligent living things that need respect: if they don't want to be handled, don't handle them/cause them any fear!
