Had to put my Sunny to sleep on 3/26/06

I just don't know what to do now. My 6 yr. old sulfur crested cockatoo was suffering with PDD proventricular dilatation disease also call wasting away disease. I was so horrified when the vet told me this. I knew what this disease does and I knew my Sunny was dieing of a slow death. I had to stop his suffering. I told the vet theres no way he had this I was so careful. He wasn't around other birds and I wasn't either. He said the chances are he had it when I bought Sunny 6 yrs ago from the pet store. He said birds can carry this disease for years and then all the sudden it can show its ugly head. I am so devastated over the loss of my Sunny. Words can not express how much pain I feel. I can't even eat or sleep. My heart aches for him every second. But this isn't the end this disease is transmittable and I have to worry about my Missy (greenwing macaw) and Emma (military macaw) having this horrible disease now. THERE IS NO CURE!!!! We just finished building an addition to our home just for my birds. I also bought a hyacinth macaw which she was supposed to come and live with us in April. But now she can't because my other 2 macaws could be carrying it. I just can't believe this happened. Sunny was the sweetest and kindest bird I ever met. He never bite anyone, he wasn't loud just very sweet and loved to cuddle with us. I wish I had given him more attention, toys and love when he was here. I am so lost without him.

So very sorry to hear of your loss of Sunny. I know he loved you as much as you loved and and will be looking down as he fly over the rainbow bridge.

PDD is very unpredictable, it may effect your macaws and it may pass them by. I have a friend who lost one of his Hy's to PDD and the other is fine as well as his other birds.

I hope you have a necropsy done to comfirm the PDD.

You have all our prayers...............

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Your other babies will help you get through this and I sincerely hope that your macaws do not have PDD as well. Take care

Wendy, I am so so sorry to hear this. Your heart must just be breaking. I will say a prayer for your little Sunny. Are you going to have a neocropsy done?

Wendy:

You ABSOLUTELY must have a necropsy and histopathy to make sure he had PDD. There are at least 3 other very similar disorders. He may have died from something very bad, but not transmittable. PDD has been known to linger for as long as 8 years and maybe longer. Your vet was correct.

If your birds were exposed, then you MUST not bring the HY to your home. Its heartbreaking, but losing more birds won't make it better. You might want to contact Dr. Branson Ritchie at the University of Georgia Veternary College and discuss this with him. His team is currently doing research.

Wendy, I am so sorry about Sunny. Please do have a necropsy done, you have other bird's lives at stake. And also have your other birds thoroughly checked before bringing any new birds into your home, especially a vulnerable baby Hy.

Oh honey, I am sooooooooo sorry! I can't even imagine losing one of mine! Big, giant hugs your way.
As everyone else said, please do get a necropsy done just to make sure that is what it was!

Very sorry ... I hope that it isn't the worst case scenario, for the rest of your flock's health ... I feel for your pain ... glad you told us. I know everyone worries about PDD.
