Pooping problems????

Hi,

My new U2 that I have had for about a week is pooping weird??? When he poops its looks almost like a gluey consistensy it comes out in a long thickish string!! Once only some of it dropped and the rest just like hung there and I had to wipe it off!!!!

What could the problem be???? At first it was all white, but now its looking normal. Another thing is when he pooped the pile was like bubbly!!?!?!?!?!?!

Doesn't sound normal to me. I would schedule a vet check.

Just what are you feeding him? Bird's droppings shouldn't "stick" to their feathes. A dirty vent indicates a problem and the bubbles in the droppings are also cause for concern. Make sure to take your bird to a certified avian vet. A regular vet is pretty useless when treating real bird problems.

Hopefully, Kim Bear will see this. I was afraid to not comment because I think you do have a sick bird.

Stress of a new home could have brought this on so watch the poop tomorrow. If it gets worse or does not clear up see your avian vet.

Hi,

He was on the pretty bird seed diet. Right now he is eating Kaytee parrot seed. I know thats not good either and I plan on switching him to either pellets or a better seed??

I was going to make a vet appt. just to get him checked out anyway, but my vet said with it getting colder out just to put him on ....... Ummmmm it had some weird name it goes in the water?????

Also, when he poops it kinda sounds like a squeeky door????? If that makes any sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Usually bubble in droppings are an indicator of bacterial or fungal infections. That's what I suspect. Your vet will take a sample and do a smear. If he needs any meds, you will then be instructed on how to administer them and of course the actual meds themselves. As a rule, over the counter meds just don't work well on birds. Most antibiotics and antifungals must have a prescription by a licensed doctor.

Bubbles usually show up when the bird has diarrhea. Like Nancy said most over the counter mets do not work! Keep in mind we are heading into the weekend and should you have an emergency a avian will be hard to find.

I think the bird should be seen and have a wet mount fecal and gram stain done. Ask your avian vet what he thinks. Without seeing the poop and looking at it under a microscope you are shooting in the dark!

Exactly. You cannot properly diagnose over the phone or on the internet. Take the bird to the vet. Its what a responsible bird owner should do. Don't play around with this. Birds can crash and burn very, very quickly. JMHO

If the vet advised you to use over the counter anti-biotics without ever seeing your bird, I'd try a different vet. If it's a bird with a known recurrent problem, that's one thing.

Amen. No vet should ever diagnose a bird over the phone. If it is fungal, Ornycycline sounds like an antibiotic. It will only make the fungal infection worse. Get to a good avian vet. If it is bacterial, something you can find over-the-counter may not do the trick. I wouldn't play around with it. Keep us posted.
