Iodine deficiency is a common problem in many caged birds but is especially common in the Australian birds. The Australian birds seem to need more iodine than other pet birds. Iodine is required for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Deficiencies can result in poor feather condition, difficulty molting, breathing problems, reduced singing, reduced activity and poor breeding. Liqui-Kelp provides the additional iodine needed by the Australian finches and other's.
We use it with all our birds, Macaws, Grey's Cockatoo's I know all birds have dust, but since we rehommed all our U2's we have had no dust build up. plus I clean 2 x a day and have Hepa filters between every cage so that really helps. |

He seems to like the eucalypt branches I put in his cage and has attacked the hinky nuts with GUSTO :D... he also has swung about happily on a rope swing we put in with popsticks on it for chewy fun XD He's getting a bit louder and more chirpy, I assume because he's more confident. He also is now jumping onto the front of the cage to inspect us more... Not hiding at the back of the cage like he did when he arrived.
In case you're wondering - the branches were thoroughly checked for bugs and diseases. I asked a local bird specialty store what trees they prefer and he said eucalypt, and said they shouldn't have any trouble with them. We also boiled the popsticks to make sure they were clean before we made them into a rattle. I was careful as could be ^^; When I figure out how to get DVD videos off my camcorder and onto the computer, I'll try and Youtube some of his playtime... But I might need to wait until my bf gets me a copy of the program 'Vegas'. Oh, and it was ANZAC day yesterday so I couldn't get the spray bottle to mist him, but have asked my family to grab one today while I'm at work :}

Misted Luen today after work... He didn't seem to care I was doing it either way. He didn't avoid it, but didn't seem overly enthused about it. Better than him screeching and hiding though.
I stopped after a short while - I figured I'd do it a little daily, to get him used to it, instead of full-on soaking him on the first shot. And his feathers do seem pinker. Also, with some of the dust gone, I can see a little more of those pale grey-pink baby feathers on his chest contrasting to the brighter pink. Also, thanks for the advice... I've been keeping an eye out for liquid kelp since I read your post. No luck yet, but I'll keep looking :}
