Wink Poor Quality Galah Pics ('Cos I can!)

(Pictures taken on camera phone...)

Despite being one of the most timid birds ever when I first met him.. I was quite surprised this afternoon when Araluen, the Rose-Breasted Cockatoo/Galah I'd owned for all of four hours (after getting him from birdy Hell) let me scritch his chest O_O
Okay, so if I reach in the cage, he freaks out. He doesn't shy away when I hold millet to him, but he doesn't eat it... And he only let me pat him for 5min through the bars of his cage... But it was still awesome.
He's also played with his rope toy, eaten a fair bit and spent a while preening... Though he hasn't yet dipped into his birdy bath.
Maybe boosting his confidence won't be as hard as I thought o.o

I think his line of thought on the way home was more along the lines of 'Ugh, why did I bite that thing? I don't know where it's been!'... lol He didn't go easy on my bf. Bf's hands are covered in plasters
However, my family all agree he (Araluen, not bf) ALREADY looks happier. My brother and his friend just made a loud noise and turned quickly to see if they'd upset/frightened Luen to see the little galah sitting preening with his feathers in a mess.
Still can't believe he already let me pat him!

Spice was real dull when we got her- from very poor diet. We started her on liquid kelp drops in her water bottle, and she is bright as our 1 yr old Gahla now, plus better diet with drizzle of red palm oil really helps too. They love attention, and play very hard. Yes' they are little nippers but we found them all to be, just their nature.

I suspect Luen will look dull until he has his first bath (last owner never washed him D:) however I also believe he's a western galah, which are paler than the more common eastern variety anyway. He just looks too pale. I don't think there's raspberry plumage under there, but it would be nice to see some strawberries and cream :}
I left a bath in there and he ignored it completely. Next I'll try misting him, because he's still not confident enough for the shower. I don't want to give him a heart attack!

I think he looks great and I bet he'll get less dull and a darker pink as he gets a little older. That's my guess. At only several months my galah was the same way. Very grey-ish mixed with pink when we first got her buy her colors have since become more defined and bright.

"Next I'll try misting him, because he's still not confident enough for the shower. "

I've gotta hear how that goes. We got our galah last August and she still has no clue what to do when she gets misted. She just sits there and takes is while looking miserable. My TAG on the other hand loves a bath. She's as silly as they come when misted or in the shower.

Galahs are known as the quietest "cockatoo" (only cockatoo's not other birds) and least dusty? It's either the galah or corella that's least dusty cockatoo, about the same amount as a grey. They are great birds galahs, you have picked a really good bird there!

Araluen is dusty, but I think that's because he hasn't been able to bathe yet o.o And has ignored the dish I put in his cage with water in it. I heard corellas were really dusty... Then again, I heard that from a taxi driver I was talking to... lol He said he'd owned a long-billed corella for three years, and was trying to convince me to get a corella.

He is really quiet though :}

I have a TAG and a Galah and the Galah is much more dusty. As a matter of fact, there's no comparrison. Me and my wife always say she's like the character "pigpen" from Charlie Brown. Whenever she fluffs up a poof of dust goes up into the air. Their feathers also stick to things and we've definately seen a greater amount of dust in the home after getting her. And, we do mist her every day.

Huh, we have 2 Galahs and have no dust problem at all. Our Pepper we purchased as a weaned baby, was the most brilliant rasberry. When we took Spice in for first vetting- blood work-and all, thats when we decided to place her on Liquid kelp right away, and in 2 months she turned bright rasberry as well. I bathe them all, no misting and no problem with dust.
