What toy NOT to get your Too!!

A few years ago I bought my U2 the stainless steel cockatoo toy. She loves it. It is a bunch of stainless steel nuts and flywings on a big stainless steel bolt.

She has spent many many hours screwing and unscrewing this toy. Only problem, I have started to find anything with nuts, bolts or flywings taken apart now. I turn my back for two seconds and she is taking apart the pionus cage, I found bolts missing from one of the stands holding a conure cage. The leg on my dining room table is missing a nut. My cockatoo has learned to disassemble everything! Buying this toy was not a smart move and I regret it. Cockatoo beaks are nothing but big wrenches!

ah, yes. my vet told me cockatoos are the engineers of birds. they love to take things apart. i "used" to have a swing in my too's cage. one morning i found in on the floor of the cage. i thought "what a cheap toy"! screwed it back together. next morning, same thing. to the point that as soon as i put it together he'd have the thing disassembeled in 2 minutes flat. he loves it! swing's gone, i made sure i threw it out with the bird poop that morning!

Yes I buy Tyler these wonderful expensive acrylic "unbreakable" toys that she takes apart. Another joke was the " bulletproof toys" . When I took the toy back to the store the owner said the toys noted they were bulletproof , not cockatoo proof. The best toy for my money for Tyler is the large shredder pinatas. One cost me twelve bucks and takes her a week to totally demolish the toy.

My male U2 loves knots; he will take a knot apart and reknot it; if it isn't to his liking he will continue to redo it until he is satisfied! Funniest thing I have ever seen!

Made the same mistake

I made the same mistake but fixed it with a set of wrenches that i gave to Koko now he tries to use those instead of his beak and most of the time he can't get the nuts off with them(Most of the time but i think he is learning to use them better with time)

He already knows how to use a flathead screwdriver so DONT let your birds get their beak on one or they will be out and fixing everything in site so you can never use it again.LOL

M2's are the smartest birds in the world when it comes to taking things apart.

John

My Tyler will not undo knots. She just snips them in half with her beak. Any hanging string gets snipped. A loose thread on a shirt, drawstrings hanging off of pants, any kind of small rope used in a toy. Snip snip snip. We won't even go into the blinds. One escape for an hour and she snipped the mini blinds to pieces. Did not beak the metal at all. Just cut every cord holding the whole thing together.
I don't have one plant left in the bird room. Even supervised she takes them apart a snip at a time. It is like having a toddler on speed.

LOL Lyn! He took apart the pionus cage!! LOL!! I have tears running down my face, I'm laughing so hard!!! I'm sure it's irritating as heck to you though!
My 'zon undoes knots and chews wood, that's about it. My quaker on the other hand...he likes to disassemble things, and I had the same issues with those bulletproof toys and him! LOL

Before I had adopted my macaw, Razz, I had fallen in love with a little Goffin's cockatoo. I had visited with him often and the last time I went to see him I told myself if anyone was thinking about taking him I would snatch him up. When I went into the store he was gone. I know the woman who he lives with now so I get to be Colby's uncle. Colby is a real brat though. No matter what, he gets out of his cage, he takes out bolts, undoes locks, etc. He then goes to the other birds' cages and lets them out and goes in to wreck all their toys. My friend keeps threatening to give Colby to me.

I'm not sure if that toy actually taught your bird how to undo things Personally, I like those toys as they are a great diversion as they put a cockatoo's natural ability to use. Funny that it's the WHITE birds that are the grease monkeys of the parrot kingdom.

All of your posts have me in stitches, although I don't parront a 'too (dust plus lungs NOT a good combination). Does anyone know anything about Loctite? Would it be safe to use on things that need to remain assembled? It's a product used to secure hardware and is very good. It's probably available at any auto parts store. Just a thought ...
