Question Is this possible? Should I go for it?

K, here's the deal. I see this 2 year old umbrella cockatoo for adoption on line. The ad states that the owner needs to move, and cannot take the bird with her. She (the owner) states that she is a well mannered bird that loves attention and to cuddle. The only possible issue someone may have with her is that she is EXTREMELY LOUD... OFTEN. There is a rehoming fee.

* 1st question: is there a way to calm some of the screaming if it is constant?

* 2nd question: What type of "rehoming fee" could one expect to pay for such a bird even if it does have a screaming problem?

You see, I've already emailed her about the rehoming fee, but it just doesn't seem right to me... I'll tell you all how much once I hear from you what would be reasonable.

She'd like me to go to her house for Pizza & see if the bird and I have chemistry... what do you think?

I dont pay rehoming fees, if they want a good home, then thats what they will get.. I will give a small fee for large cages.

Umbrella Cockatoo's are loud. That is just part of it. Mostly they are loud because they want held. LOL They can be manipulative little brats! LOL

Is it a female?
2 is a young age. A baby would cost you 1200.00 or more. I have no idea what would be a good price for you.

I would go for pizza and see how it goes. Good luck!

Yes, it is a female. It's not a matter of a "good price" it's just that the rehoming fee she is asking for seems too low... It's raising a red flag for me.

If you understand what you're potentially getting yourself into with an Umbrella 'Too, then go for the pizza. Unless the invite suddenly requires a plane ticket to Nigeria (lol), it seems legit enough. The owner probably understands that 'toos are hard to find good homes for and just wants the right place for her girl. As for price, you can probably go to any parrot rescue and find an umbrella too for an adoption fee of $300 or less.

It will be very difficult to reverse a bad screaming habit in a U2 once they've been doing it for a while, IMO, and boy do they scream loud.

I don't have a too, but in my opinion, I would think that a fee for rehoming woudld be okay if you are getting a cage with her. It is so funny you should ask this very question, because we were just talking about this last night. I wouldn't require a fee if I had to rehome my sun, as long as I was sure he was going to some one who would love him and be good to him. Now I would charge for the cage if they wanted it. To me and maybe to this lady, a good home is more important than any amount of money.

Also, again, not having had a too, I am not sure about the screaming, but it would seem to me that if you could do some training with this new girl, then you might be able to retrain her behaviour. Plus her idea of LOUD and yours might be totally different.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Well, I figure I can check out her volume during pizza. However, could you give me a quick summary of "what I'm potentially getting myself into?"
I'm aware of the strong will, and the fact that it is though they have showered in super glue once they are on you. She is two hours away so I'd like to be somewhat prepared.

Thanks.

It seems legit to me. She actually wants you to come to her home, if this was a scam or something that would be the last thing she would want.
U2's and all large 2's, even the goffins can get really loud, with a nasty pitch and boy can they scream and scream if they want to.

Cockatoos are the most rehomed parrots and people do not disclose the true reason why they are rehoming them.I once took in 5 Cockatoos from separate situations and they acted one way when I visited them but once they got comfortable all hell broke loss. The one thing you have to consider is if you have other birds how they will react to the noise level. And hopefully you own so neighbors won't be an issue.I had to rehome mine due to asthma.I must of had a brief moment of insanity for 3 years because my house was total chaos. It still is now.
